IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly golf honors, for the competition week ending Tuesday, March 8.
Men’s Golf Player of the Week
Albin Bergstrom * Jr. * South Florida
Bergstrom led the way for South Florida during the Colleton River Collegiate on March 7-8 at the Colleton River Club Nicklaus Course in Bluffton, South Carolina. Bergstrom was in the medalist mix throughout and finished in solo third place one stroke off the pace with a three-round score of 13-under-par 203 (66-68-69) on the par-72, 7,042-yard configuration. Bergstrom was one of three players to shoot in the 60s in each round and rolled in a tournament-high 20 birdies. Bergstrom also tied Cincinnati’s Clay Amlung with a 4.17 stroke average (-10) on par 5s during the tournament to lead the field.
Women’s Golf Players of the Week
Melanie Green * So. * South Florida
Green captured her first career collegiate tournament win as the co-medalist of the SMU Trinity Forest Invitational on March 7-8 at the Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas. Green battled unseasonable elements to shoot rounds of 74-72-70 to finish at even par 216, one of just two players to match par for the week (co-medalist Lovisa Gunnar from Tulsa). Green rolled in five birdies during the final round to climb into the top spot on the leaderboard and shared the tournament lead with 10 total birdies. Green also paced the field with a 3.90 stroke average (-3) on par 4s on the par-72, 6,460-yard setup at Trinity Forest.
Lovisa Gunnar * Fr. * Tulsa
Gunnar shared medalist honors with South Florida’s Green and guided Tulsa to a team second-place showing at the SMU Trinity Forest Invitational on March 7-8 to capture her first career collegiate victory. Gunnar fashioned rounds of 72-70-74 to match Green as the only players at even par 216 in unseasonable tournament conditions. Gunnar also joined the tournament leaders with 10 birdies on the week and logged a 3.93 stroke average (-2) on par 4s at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
