PINEHURST, N.C. – Houston was the top team in round one of the 2022 American Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship on Sunday at Pinehurst No. 6. The Cougars fired a team score of 4-over-par 292 to take a four-stroke lead following the opening 18 holes. No. 28 UCF and SMU were tied for second at 9-over-par 297.
Due to expected inclement weather on Monday at Pinehurst No. 6, teams played the opening nine holes of the second round on Sunday afternoon. Houston extended its lead unofficially to eight strokes at 7-over-par halfway through round two before play was suspended for the night due to darkness.
The average score for the first round of the tournament was 77.46 on the par-72, 6,290-yard layout of Pinehurst No. 6. Five players managed to shoot even par 72 to share the first-round lead in the individual draw.
Houston, the third seed in the tournament, saw even par rounds from Maria Jose Martinez and Annie Kim to stake its round one lead. Nicole Abelar logged a 1-over 73 and Delaney Martin carded a 3-over-par 75 to cap the scorers for the Cougars.
UCF was powered by even par showings from Tunrada Piddon and Alyssa Lamoureux to share second place on the team leaderboard. Camille Banzet recorded a 4-over 76 and Jess Baker a 5-over 77 to round out scorers for the Knights.
SMU was led by a 72 from Kennedy Pedigo to grab a piece of second with UCF. Ashley Chow, Katie James and Serena Shah each shot 3-over-par 75 for the Mustangs in round one.
South Florida was in solo fourth place as a team after firing a first round 299 (+11). Ana Maria Barriga and Juliana Camargo turned in matching rounds of 74 and Melanie Green posted a score of 75 for the Bulls.
Memphis began the tournament in solo fifth place with a 14-over-par score of 302. Victoria England paced the Tigers at 1-over-par 73, with Brooke Veres at 75, Victoria Gallegos at 77 and Katie Stinchcomb at 77 scoring for Memphis.
Teams will resume the second round of the 2022 American Women’s Golf Championship on Monday with tee times off number 10 expected to begin at 9 a.m. (ET).
