Tulsa, Memphis to Meet Saturday for American Women's Tennis Championship

TULSA, Okla. – The team that has played in the most American Athletic Conference Championship finals will battle against a first-time finalist Saturday when Tulsa takes on Memphis for the conference title at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT on ESPN+
 
Tulsa advanced to the championship final for the sixth time in seven seasons with a 4-3 semifinal win against SMU Friday, while Memphis will play for The American title for the first time after a 4-0 win against South Florida at Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
 
Saturday’s match will be the second meeting between Tulsa and Memphis this season. The Tigers were 4-2 winners against the Golden Hurricane Feb. 27 in Tulsa.
 
Bruce Howard, Mark Bey and Breanna Sorensen will handle the ESPN+ coverage of Saturday’s championship final.

Lily Hutchings’ three-set win at No. 5 singles gave Tulsa a 4-3 win against SMU Friday, sending the Golden Hurricane to the American Athletic Conference final for the sixth time.
 
Hutchings fought back from a 1-6 first set to take a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 win against Nicole Petchey, ending the match after SMU had tied the score at 3-3 after a three-set win by Jackie Nylander at No. 3 singles.
 
Valeryia Rozenkova won in both singles and doubles for Tulsa as she took a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles and paired with Maria Berlanga for a 6-3 decision at No. 1 doubles.
 
The match was a battle between two top-50 teams as SMU came in at No. 43 in the ITA rankings, while Tulsa was No. 50.
 
Tulsa improved to 16-3 all-time in the American Athletic Conference Championship. The Golden Hurricane will play for a fourth American title with Saturday’s match against Memphis.

Memphis advanced to the American Athletic Conference Championship final for the first time as the Tigers cruised to a 4-0 win against South Florida Friday.
 
The No. 4-seeded Tigers won three singles matches in straight sets and claimed the doubles point against a resilient South Florida squad that had played to back-to-back 4-3 victories against higher-seeded teams in its first two matches of the championship.
 
Aran Teixido Garcia and Camila Romero registered straight-set wins at the top of the singles ladder and the two paired for a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles to lead the Tigers Friday. Monique Woog also added two wins as she took a 6-2, 6-0 vdecision at No. 6 singles and joined Emily Meyer for a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
 
Memphis had made only one previous appearance in The American Championship semifinals (2014). The Tigers will play for their first American title Saturday.
