BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – Beautiful weather on Saturday yielded great scoring conditions for teams on day two of the 2022 American Men’s Golf Championship at Southern Hills Plantation Club.
SMU carded an 11-under-par round of 277 in round two to move to the front of the team leaderboard by one stroke at 559 (282-277, -17) through 36 holes. Houston checked in just behind the Mustangs with a two-round score of 560 (278-282). SMU’s Nathan Petronzio held the overnight lead in the individual draw for the second straight day.
The average score after two rounds at Southern Hills Plantation Club was 73.04 over the 90 completed rounds. A total of 11 of the 45 players who competed in round two fired rounds in the 60s on Saturday.
SMU leapt to the front of the pack after a stellar day two showing. Petronzio held the lead in the medalist race at 134 thanks to a second-round score of 6-under-par 66 (68-66). Noah Goodwin moved into a tie for sixth place at 139 (71-68, -5). Holden Wisener was tied for 13th place with a two-round total of 143 (74-69).
Houston enjoyed a strong back nine effort to pull within one shot on the leaderboard and closed at 560. Marcus Wochner tied Petronzio for the round of the day with a 6-under 66 to move into solo second place at 135 (69-66, -9). Austyn Reily was just behind in third place with a total of 136 (69-67, -8), and Alexander Frances was tied for 17th place at 145 (70-75).
Defending champion South Florida shared third place with a 1-under-par round of 287 to post a two-day total of 573 (286-287). Run Youprayong tied for fourth place overall thanks to a second-day 67 (71-67=138) and Albin Bergstrom checked in solo ninth at 140 (69-71, -4).
Wichita State moved up to a tie for the third spot with a second straight under par round, carding a 2-under 286 to post 573 (287-286) after two rounds. Brock Polhill shot a 5-under-par 67 to move up to a tie for sixth place at 139 (72-67) and Dawson Lewis added a second-day 68 to check in at 138 (70-68) and a share of fourth.
UCF slid back one slot to solo fifth place with a 36-hole score of 574 (287-287, -2). Teddy Tetak paced the Knights on Saturday with a 3-under 69 to climb into a tie for sixth place at 139 (70-69). Egor Eroshenko shared 10th place with a 141 (70-71) and Johnny Travale was tied for 17th at 145 (73-72).
The third and final round of the 2022 American Men’s Golf Championship is scheduled to begin on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. (ET), with coverage to follow on ESPN+. The top six teams will be off the first tee beginning at 7:30 a.m. (ET) and the remaining three teams will begin their rounds off number 10 starting at 7:45 a.m. (ET).
