BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – One of the strongest teams all week at Southern Hills Plantation Club, SMU put an exclamation point on the weekend to claim the 2022 American Men’s Golf Championship on Sunday. The Mustangs finished with a third round score of 12-under-par 276 to establish a 54-hole tournament scoring record of 835 (282-277-276, -29) and capture their second American team title.
SMU’s record scoring effort outpaced South Florida (837, -27) at the Black Diamond Ranch Quarry Course in 2015. The Mustangs also staked claim to being the first American squad with multiple rounds sub-280 on a par-72 layout in championship history.
Nathan Petronzio became the third SMU medalist at the American Championship, leading wire-to-wire and winning by two strokes with a 13-under total of 203 (68-66-69). Run Youprayong from South Florida (71-67-67) and Marcus Wochner from Houston (69-66-70) were co-runners up with matching scores of 11-under 205.
The average score over 54 holes at Southern Hills Plantation Club was 72.64 over the 135 completed rounds, including an under par 71.82 in Sunday’s third round. Petronzio was the only player in the field to finish in the 60s all three days.
SMU built on its 36-hole lead with a strong Sunday showing from Noah Goodwin, who placed fourth overall with a 9-under-par score of 207 (71-68-68). Holden Wisener shared 11th place with a 212 (74-69-69) finish and Ollie Osborne tied for 14th place at 214 (70-74-70). Justin Thompson rounded out the Mustangs lineup in 22nd place with a 218 final tally (73-74-71).
South Florida made a surge on day three and narrowly missed equaling their single-round record from the 2021 championship by carding a 17-under-par 271 for solo second place at 844 (286-287-271). Shubham Jaglan joined Youprayong with a third-round 67, and Albin Bergstrom tied for fifth place at 7-under-par 209 (69-71-69). Luke Gifford tied for 18th place with a score of 216 (72-74-70) and Sam Nicholson was solo 21st place at 217 (74-75-68).
Houston secured third place as a team on the strength of Wochner’s showing, posting a 16-under-par 848 for the championship (278-282-288). Austyn Reily joined Wochner in the top five in a tie for fifth place at 7-under 209 (69-67-73). Alexander Frances (70-75-73=218, tie for 22nd place), Braxton Watkins (73-74-73=220, tie for 28th place) and Jacob Borow (70-78-72=220, tie for 28th place) added scoring placements for the Cougars.
Other individual players in the final tournament top 10 included Cincinnati’s Joey McCarthy (73-69-68) and UCF’s Teddy Tetak (70-69-71) in a tie for seventh place at 6-under-par 210, and UCF’s Johnny Travale (73-72-66) and Egor Eroshenko (70-71-70) tied for ninth at 5-under 211.
