IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly outdoor track and field honors, for the competition week ending Sunday, April 24.
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
De’Vion Wilson * So. * Houston
Wilson made an impactful showing in his collegiate debut in the men’s 400-meter hurdles for Houston at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight on April 23. Wilson raced to the event win with a time of 51.63 to rank second in The American and 56th in the NCAA as of April 26.
Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Taran Taylor * So. * Wichita State
Taylor claimed the top spot in the conference in the javelin representing Wichita State at the John Jacobs Invitational on April 22. Taylor’s opening throw covered 69.41m (227-9.0) to take the event title by just under five meters. Along with leading the conference, Taylor ranked 25th in the nation as of April 26.
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Latasha Smith * So. * UCF
Smith repeated as conference track athlete of the week following a strong all-around performance for UCF during the LSU Alumni Gold on April 23. Smith’s top showing was in the 200-meter dash, where she posted a time of 23.17 to finish third overall and second among collegiate entries. Smith’s time was second in The American and 33rd in the NCAA as of April 26.
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Asherah Collins * So. * UCF
Collins was a standout performer for UCF in the triple jump during the LSU Alumni Gold on April 23. Collins posted a runner-up attempt of 13.05m (42-9.75) in the third round. Collins ranked third in the conference and 32nd nationally in the triple jump as of April 26.
