IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly outdoor track and field honors, for the competition week ending Sunday, April 3.
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Michael Power * R-Jr. * Tulsa
Power competed in the fastest 5000-meter heat of the season nationally thus far representing Tulsa at the Stanford Invitational on April 1 in Palo Alto, California. Power turned in a time of 13:29.57, the fifth-fastest in the event and in the NCAA this season, to pace The American as of April 5.
Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Michael Bryan * Sr. * Wichita State
Bryan was the top collegiate finisher in the hammer throw and secured a podium finish for Wichita State at the Hayward Premier on April 1 in Eugene, Oregon. Bryan’s fourth attempt covered 70.32m (230-8.0) to claim third place to lead the conference and rank fifth nationally as of April 5.
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Cecilia Tamayo-Garza * Sr. * Houston
Tamayo-Garza claimed a runner-up finish and was the top collegiate finisher in the 200-meter dash at the Houston Alumni Invitational on April 2. Tamayo-Garza crossed the finish line with a time of 23.62 in the eighth and final section to place second overall.
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Destiny Lawrence * So. * Houston
Lawrence took the event win in the triple jump at the Houston Alumni Invitational on April 2. Lawrence cleared 13.61m (44-8.0) on the first attempt of the flight to take the event victory. Lawrence led The American and ranked fourth in the NCAA as of April 5.
