GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina soccer team defeated the High Point Panthers 2-0 Thursday night in Johnson Stadium for their first win in the season. A strike from Grace Doran and a Panthers own goal gave Head Coach Gary Higgins the first win of his ECU career.
Doran's goal in the 10th minute came off of a wonderful feed from Sydney Schnell. Schnell received a pass on the left side of the pitch and took the ball down the sidelines before cutting into the box and making a well-placed well-timed pass to Doran. Doran, making a cut in from the top of the 18, was able to punch it in first time into the left side of the net with a strong finish past High Point keeper Morgan Hairston. Doran's goal was the first of the season for the Pirates.
Through 45 minutes, ECU led High Point nine to nothing on shots taken while also earning five corners to just three for the Panthers.
In the second half, the Pirates were able to keep their feet on the gas, creating scoring chances and ultimately a second goal. In the 52nd minute, Catherine Holbrook crossed the ball in to two awaiting Pirates and after bouncing around, the ball landed at the feet of a High Point defender. The Panther's clear attempt rebounded instead off of a teammate and narrowly snuck over the line for an own goal.
With the margin at 2-0 the rest of the way, the Panthers only managed their one shot on the game, coming in the 83rd minute. The lone shot was blocked and gave ECU and keeper Maeve English a clean sheet and a victory for the first time in 2022.

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida women's soccer team battled another extended lightning delay and weren't able to overcome a second-half goal in a 1-0 loss to American on Thursday night.
Similar to its first match of the year, USF found itself having to head back to the locker room early, when 20 minutes into the game, lightning entered the area, forcing a two-hour and thirty-seven-minute delay.
After the unplanned break, neither team was able to find the back of the net, sending the teams back to their locker rooms scoreless.
Twenty-one minutes into the second half, American broke through. American took a shot which was saved by Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.), but the USF keeper was unable to corral the rebound and Izzy Kadzban sent it past a diving Martinez to take the lead.
Ultimately, the lead would hold as the game was called due to weather in the 85th minute.

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer (0-1-2) recorded their second draw of the season on Friday evening after posting a 0-0 finish against city rival, Penn (0-0-1) on the road. A competitive first half push from the Quakers was countered by a second half offensive burst from the Owls, but despite the back-and-forth battle, the match ended in a deadlock.
Penn entered the game exerting offensive pressure immediately, but keeper Kyla Burns headlined the first half defensive efforts for the Owls, recording five saves on nine shots, including a 17th minute diving save to keep the game neutral.
Just three minutes later, Burns made yet another stop, but a deflection back into the box allowed Penn another attempt on goal. Graduate transfer Katie Coritz came up big for the Cherry and White, making a sliding block on the goal-line to stop Penn's closest attempt of the night.
