SMU Undefeated, Six American Squads Pick Up Wins On Opening Day

The SMU volleyball team was undefeated on the opening day of the season, going 2-0 on Friday, while six other American squads picked up one win on the day.

DALLAS, Texas – The SMU volleyball team won their first two matches of the season Friday night, sweeping UC Irvine in the morning before taking down DePaul in five sets in the last match of the night
 
Jamison Wheeler and Natalie Perdue led the Mustangs with 34 kills and 32 kills respectively. CC Cullen paced the matches with 97 assists (12.13 assists/set). Defensively, London Austin-Roark finished with 10 blocks at the net (1.25 blks/s).

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-The Temple volleyball team split a pair of matches to open the season on Friday, losing to Seton Hall in three sets before coming from behind and beating Delaware in five sets.
 
Jelena Prolic led all Owls with 31 kills, while Taylor Davenport added 26. Patrycja Zielinska paced the matches with 76 assists (9.50 a/s).

TAMPA, Fla. – The South Florida volleyball team split a pair of matches to begin the season on Friday, defeating William and Mary in straight sets before falling to Ball State in a hard-fought five set match.
 
Maria Clara Andrade led the Bulls with 34 kills (4.24 k/s). Kelsey O’loughlin and Tatiana Johnson paced the matches with 40 and 39 assists, respectively. On the defensive side, CC Clausen finished with 43 digs (5.38 dig/s).

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis volleyball team split their season opening matches on Friday defeating Nicholls in five sets before falling to Central Michigan in another five set match.
 
Tabytha Toelke (29 kills) and Miaya Smith (28 kills) led the Tiger attack, while Loren Robertson paced the offense with 85 assists. On the defensive side, Bailey Houlihan finished with a combined 35 digs in the two matches.

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Houston volleyball team split a pair of matches to open the season on Friday, falling to Rice 3-0 before beating host LSU 3-1.
 
Abbie Jackson led the Cougars with 32 kills and 36 points in the two matches. Annie Cooke paced the matches with 57 assists. Defensively, Kate Georgiades led Houston with 41 digs (5.86 dig/s) while Rachel Tullos finished with 10 blocks (1.43 blk/s).

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Wichita State Shockers volleyball team split their season opener on Friday, defeating Wyoming 3-2 in the morning before falling to No. 18 Creighton 3-1 in the night match.
 
Sophie Rohling led the Shockers with 34 kills in the two combined matches and 37.4 points. Kayce Litzau paced the matches with 78 assists. Defensively, Lily Liekweg and Kayce Litzau led the Shockers with 27 digs each.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina volleyball team split the season opening matches at the Pirate Invitational on Friday, defeating Furman 3-1 in the first match and falling 3-0 to Towson in the night match.
 
Angeles Alderete led ECU with 27 kills in the two matches and 33.5 points (4.79 pts/s). Julianna Askew and Payton Evenstad paced the matches with 37 assists and 32 assists respectively. On the defensive side, Kenzie Beckham finished with 28 digs (4.00 dig/s) and Shaylynn Hall had 5.0 total blocks.

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the opening day of the Tribute to #10 tournament Friday inside Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
 
The Bearcats (0-2) suffered a five-set loss to Illinois State in the morning before falling in four sets to Dayton Friday night. 
 
Sophomore Abby Walker totaled 27 kills and 13 blocks on the day, including a 14-kill, 8-block performance against the Flyers. Freshman setter Caroline Endres, earning in the start in her first collegiate matches, tallied 84 assists.

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Tulsa volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to begin the 2022 season on Friday night, losing to Pepperdine 3-1 in the morning before falling to No. 1 Nebraska in straight sets in the evening match.
 
Kayley Cassaday finished the day with 24 kills, including 10 against the Cornhuskers.  Brayden Hipp and Avery Kalsu paced the matches with 27 and 26 assists, respectively. Defensively, Aysu Dalogullari led the Hurricane with 30 digs, while Rachel Brown had seven blocks.
 
Southeastern Louisiana 3, Tulane 1 (25-21, 24-26, 16-25, 22-25) Box Score
BEAUMONT, Texas - The Tulane University volleyball team (0-1) started their season with a loss to the Lions of Southeastern. The Green Wave fought hard but couldn't break through the Lion's defense dropping three straight sets after grabbing the first one 25-21, 26-24, 25-16 and 25-22.
 
The Green Wave hit .176 as a group with 53 kills. The Lions (1-0) struck early, attacking at a .205 clip as a team.
 
Junior Mackenzie Martin led the Green Wave with 12 kills and hit .189. Following closely was Kayla Kaiser with 11 kills and Melissa Kolurbasi with nine.
