UCF, Charlotte, FIU Start Week With Wins

Three American squads started off week two with wins. No. 18 FIU, UCF and Charlotte all came away with Monday night wins.

No. 18 FIU 1, (RV) St. John’s 0 – Box Score
QUEENS, NY – The No. 18 FIU men’s soccer team used an early first half goal to take down (RV) St. John’s 1-0 on Monday night in Queens, New York as the Panthers move to 1-1 on the season.
 
In the 18th minute of the match, Julian Hodek found the back of the net to put the Panthers up 1-0 on St. John’s, allowing the defense to do the work the rest of the way.
 
St. John’s managed 15 shots, including six on goal, but Kevin Harr would not allow anything past him as he finished the night with six saves to come away with the clean sheet.
 
UCF 2, North Florida 1 – Box Score
ORLANDO, Fla – The UCF Knights men’s soccer team used two late goals to secure a win over North Florida on Monday night, winning 2-1 at the UCF Soccer Complex.
 
After a tight first half, the Ospreys came out in the second and scored the first goal of the match in the 53rd minute.
 
Ten minutes later, Mael Haise answered with the game-tying goal.  Mauricio Villalobos put the Knights ahead in the 75th minute with his first goal of the season.
 
Juanvi Munoz was masterful in the box, finishing the night with seven saves.
 
Charlotte 4, Gardner-Webb 0 – Box Score
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A dominant final half hour of play and a stellar night between the sticks for junior, Thomas Wallis propelled the Charlotte men's soccer team to a dominant, 4-0, drubbing of Gardner-Webb on Monday night at Transamerica Field.
 
The four Niner goals were scored by four different scorers, with senior Alex Willis and junior Jonathan Nyandjo each tallying their second goal of the season, while seniors Sean Suber and Koby Carr found the back of the net each for the first time this year.
 
In the 60th minute, Traore cut inside the 18, split a pair of defenders and got taken to ground, earning a PK for CLT.
 
Senior captain, Sean Suber calmly put the opener past Ramirez in goal to give CLT its first lead of the night.
 
Less than three minutes later on a combination play with senior Kameron Lacey, Traore found Nyandjo just inside the six-yard box to quickly double the Charlotte advantage.
 
Just over 10 minutes after the second, the Niners found the back of the net again as Willis and Carr combined on the right side of the 18, before Carr slipped in a perfect low cross to find Willis just outside the six who cooly placed it into the bottom corner.
 
Leading, 3-0, Carr put the icing on the cake as he combined with junior Nick Scott and found the bottom right corner from a tight angle to cement the nights, 4-0, final score.
 
Temple 1, Seton Hall 1 – Box Score
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple men’s soccer team finished with a 1-1 draw on Monday night at the Temple Sports Complex against Seton Hall.
 
With nothing doing during the first half of the match, the teams has to adjust to look for the net in the second half.
 
During the 52nd minute, Andrew Burkhardt scored his first goal of the season to put the Owls up 1-0, but the lead was short lived.
 
Just three minutes later, in the 55th minute, Quenzi Huerman answered the Owl goal to tie the game at one.
