Temple's Nelson, East Carolina's Joyner Claim First Women's Basketball Honors of 2023

IRVING, Texas The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league's weekly women's basketball awards for the week ending Sunday, January 1.
 
Player of the Week
Aleah Nelson, Gr., G, Temple
Nelson put forth a dominant display for the Owls in their American Athletic Conference opening win over Memphis. The graduate guard scored 20 points, making 6-of-12 from behind the arc. She added eight rebounds, two steals and six assists while committing no turnovers. Nelson is just the third player in the NCAA Division I since 2009-10 with 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two steals, six made three-pointers and no turnovers.
 
Freshman of the Week
Amiya Joyner, Fr., F, East Carolina
Joyner claims her second consecutive Freshman of the Week honor, scoring 16 points on 7-of-18 shooting and dishing out three assists in the conference opener against Tulsa. She set a new career-high with 16 rebounds, marking the most by any Pirate player since February of 2016.
 
Weekly Honor Roll
 
Tatyana Hill, Gr., F, Houston
Hill scored her 1,000th career point in the Cougars win over SMU. She had nine points, nine rebounds, six steals and five blocks.
 
Elena Tsineke, Sr., G, South Florida
Tsineke had her sixth 20+ point performance of the season for the Bulls, scoring 25 points in the win over the Green Wave.
 
Chantae Embry, So, F, SMU
Embry set a career-high with 15 rebounds, while adding 14 points against Houston.  It marks her second double-double of the season.
 
Anijah Grant, R-Jr., Tulane
Grant scored 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting and had five rebounds in the Green Wave's conference opener against South Florida.
 
Trajata Colbert, Sr., F, Wichita State
Colbert averaged 17 points in two games for the Shockers, which included a career-high 24 points in the win over Cincinnati.
