IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly women’s basketball awards for the week ending Sunday, January 22.
Player of the Week
Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu, R-Sr., F, South Florida
Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu helped push the South Florida winning streak to eight games as the redshirt senior averaged 20 points and 15 rebounds in wins over Houston and UCF. In a two-point win over the Cougars, she scored 22 points and brought down 17 rebounds, while adding two assists and two steals. She followed that up with an 18-point, 13 rebound double-double against in-state rival UCF.
Freshman of the Week
Amiya Joyner, Fr., F, East Carolina
Joyner had a dominant week for the Pirates as she helped move East Carolina into third-place in The American. She averaged 17 points and 7.5 rebounds. Against Cincinnati, she scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds before adding 16 points and five rebounds in the win over Wichita State.
Weekly Honor Roll
Danae McNeal, Sr., G, East Carolina
McNeal was electric on both ends of the court, averaging 18 points and 5.5 steals per game in a pair of wins for East Carolina.
Emani Jefferson, Jr., G, Memphis
Jefferson helped pace the Memphis offense to a win over Temple, scoring 12 points and dishing out seven assists, while adding seven rebounds.
Chantae Embry, So., F, SMU
Embry averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in two games. She finished with a double-double against Houston, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Kyren Whittington, R-So., G, Tulane
Whittington helped the Green Wave to a pair of win, including one over previously undefeated Tulsa. She averaged 16 points and 3.5 rebounds.
Curtessia Dean, Gr., G, Wichita State
Dean averaged 14.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in two games for the Shockers. In the win over SMU, she had 16 points, six rebounds and four steals.
