Houston 59, Tulane 56 - Box Score
NEW ORLEANS – The University of Houston women's basketball team won its first road game of the season and moved to 2-0 in American Athletic Conference play for the third-straight year by beating Tulane 59-56 on Thursday in Fogelman Arena.
The Cougars (5-10, 2-0 The American) were led by Louisiana-native senior Tiara Young's 19 points and nine rebounds, who scored 11 of her points in the second quarter. Graduate Tatyana Hill and redshirt senior Britney Onyeje each chipped in 14 points with Hill bringing down nine rebounds as well.
Tulane (10-5, 0-2 The American) outscored Houston in the first and fourth quarters, but a 19-10 advantage for the Cougars in the second quarter gave the visitors enough wiggle room to hold on late in the game when the Green Wave turned up the intensity.
The Cougars limited the Green Wave's ability to share the basketball, holding the hosts to just 12 assists after entering the game averaging 17.5 per game. Houston also tied its season-high with seven blocks, recording six in the first half.
In the first quarter, Hill scored a game-high six points and started the game making her first five shots. The Houston-native finished the game 7-for-9 and helped the Cougars shoot 40.4 percent for the game; the second-straight game Houston has shot 40-plus percent from the field.
Despite not scoring a field goal over the final 3:39, the Cougars were able to make seven free throws in the final frame to hold the Green Wave back.
