IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly women’s basketball awards for the week ending Sunday, January 8.
Player of the Week
Danae McNeal, Sr., G, East Carolina
McNeal helped guide the Pirates to a 2-0 week with wins over Memphis and Tulane. The senior guard averaged 23 points, three assists, and three steals. She began the week with a 20 point outing against Memphis before scoring a career-high 26 points against Tulane, hitting six three-pointers in the game. She became the 11
th player in East Carolina history to make six three-pointers in a game.
Freshman of the Week
Amiya Joyner, Fr., F, East Carolina
Joyner picks up her third straight Freshman of the Week honor, averaging a double-double as the Pirates went 2-0 on the week. She scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds at Memphis. In the win over Tulane, Joyner had 12 points and 12 rebounds. She now has five straight double-doubles, becoming the first East Carolina player since 1979-80 with five straight double-doubles.
Weekly Honor Roll
A’riel Jackson, Fr., G, Cincinnati
Jackson scored a career-high 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting for the Bearcats, adding two assists and two rebounds against Temple.
Tiara Young, Sr., G, Houston
Young scored 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting while finishing with nine rebounds in the Cougar’s win over Tulane.
Sammie Puisis, Jr., G, South Florida
Puisis averaged 21.5 points in two wins over Temple and Wichita State. She tied a career-high 26 points against Wichita State, making 8-of-9 from behind the arc.
Jasha Clinton, So., G, Temple
Clinton averaged 21 points in two outings against South Florida and Cincinnati. She scored a career-high 28 points at Cincinnati, while dishing out six assists.
Temira Poindexter, So., F, Tulsa
Poindexter averaged a double-double to help the Golden Hurricane remain undefeated in conference play. She averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds in wins over Wichita State and UCF.
