Temple, East Carolina, Cincinnati Score Wednesday Wins

American Athletic Conference teams went 3-1 on Wednesday as Cincinnati improved to 4-1 on the year, while Temple and East Carolina both improved to 3-1.

CINCINNATI 14, YOUNGSTOWN STATE 11
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio --
The Cincinnati women's lacrosse team improved to 4-1 on the season with a 14-11 win at Youngstown State at the Watson and Tressel Training Site on Wednesday.
 
The Bearcats were led by junior midfielder Ava Goeller, who scored five goals, and freshman Camryn Callaghan, who added a hat trick despite being heavily-guarded by the Penguins following her school-record-tying eight-goal match against Marquette on Sunday.
 
Junior attacker Elizabeth Murphy added two goals and two assists, and sophomore attacker Kylie Gioia scored two goals.
 
Cincinnati started strong with five goals in the first quarter, jumping out to a 5-1 advantage until the Penguins scored a goal right before the second quarter.
 
Youngstown State outscored UC, 3-2, in the second quarter as the Penguins held in a 4-2 lead in draw controls.
 
Cincinnati led 7-4 at halftime and pulled away in the second half with freshman Mia Federovich opening the scoring after the break with her first collegiate goal and Goeller's score giving UC a 10-5 lead.
 
YSU scored five goals in the fourth period, and pulled within 3, with three minutes left, but junior midfielder Lauren Ottensmeyer's goal with 1:57 left proved to be the final dagger that gave UC a 14-10 lead with two minutes left.
 
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Lapp was outstanding between the pipes, finishing with a season-high 12 saves for the Bearcats.



EAST CAROLINA 20, CAMPBELL 8
GREENVILLE, N.C. –
The East Carolina lacrosse team used an offensive barrage to defeat the Campbell Camels, 20-8, Wednesday afternoon at Johnson Stadium. The Pirates advance to 3-1 on the season and Campbell moves to 0-2.
 
Camryn Pennypacker, Sophia LoCicero, and Frances Kimel each scored four goals, while Erin Gulden had three goals in the contest. Ellie Bromley led the team with two assists along with her one goal scored.
 
The Pirates started out fast in the first quarter with goals a pair of goals from Pennypacker and scores from LoCicero, Frances Kimel and Emily Stratton to force a Campbell timeout just 6:47 into the contest.

Later in the half, LoCicero was assisted on a goal from Sydney Frank nine seconds after an Bromley tally, which equaled the 19th fastest time between goals by the same team in NCAA history.
 
In the second quarter, the Pirates expanded on their lead with two goals from Kimel and another goal from  Pennypacker to take a 13-5 lead into the break.
 
The Pirates would continue to stretch the lead into the second half, reaching the running clock mark with 12:59 to go in the third period.

For the game, ECU tied the program record for goals in a single game at 20.
 
The Pirates won the draw control 16-15 and were 5-6 on free position shots. Flynn Reed had 4 draw controls in the game.
 
Brynn Knight played a big factor in the game, saving 5 shots and not allowing a score in her time played in the second half.



TEMPLE 9, DELAWARE 7
NEWARK, Del. –
Temple lacrosse (3-1) earned their second straight road win on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Blue Hens (2-1), 9-7 at Delaware Stadium. Both teams put on a show, ensuing in a back-and-forth battle. The Owls found the edge on a fourth quarter push, outscoring the Blue Hens 4-2 in the final 15 minutes of play to come away with the win. 

Defender Katie Shallow kicked off the scoring efforts for the Owls off the first draw, securing the first goal of the game, which also served as her first career goal just nine seconds into play. 

The Blue Hens answered back, netting back-to-back goals to take the 2-1 advantage with five minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Mackenzie Roth found the back of the net for the Owls with just two minutes remaining in the quarter after dodging the goal circle and slipping a shot past the stick of Mercy McCarthy for the equalizer.  

The second quarter remained scoreless for six minutes until Amelia Wright capitalized off a free position to put the Owls back in front. 
The Blue Hens hung around, tying the game at three by the end of the half before finding the opening goal of the second half for the 4-3 advantage. 

Belle Mastropietro netted her first goal of the day to bring the Owls to four, but Delaware soon converted once more, advancing their lead to 5-4. 

Camryn Zavacky found the stick of Maeve Tobin streaking through the eight meter, sending a bounce shot into the back of the net for the Cherry and White's fifth goal of the day. 

Charessa Crosse opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a free position conversion to put the Owls in the lead, but Delaware responded with two goals of their own to bring the game to 7-6. Julie Schickling halted the Blue Hen momentum with a goal of her own, bringing the game back to a tie with less than five minutes remaining. 

Amelia Wright dished a pass into the eight meter, finding Crosse for the quick stick finish with four minutes remaining, putting Temple in the lead, which they never lost. 

Mastropietro tallied one more for the Owls to advance the lead to two and finish the game 9-7. 



WILLIAM & MARY 11, OLD DOMINION 9
NORFOLK, Va. –
The Old Dominion Women’s Lacrosse team fell to William & Mary (1-2) Wednesday night, 11-9. Moira Olexa led the Monarchs offensively scoring three goals.  

Danielle Dundas started the scoring after Sydney Taylor found her cutting giving ODU (2-2) an early 1-0 lead. Callie Culhane extended the Monarch lead as she converted her free position attempt. Old Dominion’s lead quickly evaporated when the Kate Draddy scored with two minutes left in the first quarter. The 

Tribe evened the game up at two scoring with 30 seconds left in the first quarter.  

The second quarter was a defensive battle. Olexa scored her first goal of the game giving ODU the 3-2 advantage. William & Mary would get two more goals in the last two minutes of the first half giving them a 4-3 lead entering the third quarter.  

William & Mary added four more goals in the third quarter for an 8-3 lead with five minutes left in the quarter. ODU cut into the lead when Olexa scored with three minutes left and Olivia Tanneberger made the score 8-5 with 13 seconds left in the third quarter.  

In the fourth quarter Lilly Siskind would trim the lead to two goals. The Tribe would add two more goals giving them a 10-6 lead. Siskind would get her second goal of the game before Sam Van Gieson of William & Mary gave them a 11-7 lead. The Monarchs would try to make a comeback when Culhane scored her second goal on a free position. Olexa added her third goal with just over two minutes left but it would prove to be too much.  

ODU is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Delaware for a game starting at noon.
