IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly women’s basketball awards for the week ending Sunday, February 5.
Player of the Week
Laila Blair, Jr., G, Houston
Blair led Houston to a win over Temple to keep the Cougars in second place in the American Athletic Conference. The junior guard scored 25 points, dished out three assists and brought down five rebounds. Blair iced the game, connecting on four free throws in the final seven seconds.
Freshman of the Week
Amiya Joyner, Fr., F, East Carolina
Joyner claims her fifth Freshman of the Week award, averaging a double-double across two games. She averaged 11.5 points and 12 rebounds in games against South Florida and UCF. She had 13 points and 13 rebounds at South Florida, before scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in a win over UCF.
Weekly Honor Roll
Danae McNeal, Sr., G, East Carolina
McNeal averaged 18.5 points for the Pirates and scored a game-high 27 points in the win over UCF.
Jamirah Shutes, 5th, G, Memphis
Shutes scored 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting in the Tigers win over Wichita State. She went 7-for-9 from the charity stripe.
Sammie Puisis, Jr., G, South Florida
Puisis scored 23 points on seven made three-pointers in the Bulls win over East Carolina. She followed that up with a 14 point performance at SMU.
Jasmine Smith, Gr., G, SMU
Smith had a career-high 26 points for the Mustangs and dished out five assists in the game against South Florida.
Temira Poindexter, So., F, Tulsa
Poindexter dropped 22 points for the Golden Hurricane, keeping them in a tie for second place with a win over Cincinnati.
