The University of South Florida softball team split their double header with the Jacksonville Dolphins on Wednesday night. The Bulls run-ruled the Dolphin, 9-1, in the first game and then lost, 3-2, in game two.
GAME 1 | JU 1, USF 9
The Bulls had an action packed fourth inning, scoring five runs to take the 9-1 lead over Jacksonville. USF loaded the bases and after one foul ball, Megan Pierro watched the next four ball and earned a walk to bring a run home.
Hallie Bryant hit her fifth sacrifice fly to bring Kathy Garcia-Soto home. Back-to-back singles from Meghan Sheehan and Marissa Trivelpiece brought the final three runs home.
South Florida jumped on the board in the first inning with back-to-back home runs from Trivelpiece and Vivian Ponn. Pierro's sacrifice fly in the third inning brought Garcia-Soto home.
Jacksonville's lone run came on the second pitch of the game, a solo homerun from Madison Reynolds. Payton Dixon pitched her sixth complete game. She only faced 20 batters.
GAME 2 | JU 3, USF 2
Both teams settled in for game two, with the Bulls sending true freshman Jaden Martinez (Tallahassee) to the circle. Through the first five innings, she only allowed two hits.
Tieley Vaughn got the Bulls first hit in the fourth inning. In the next at bat, Jordyn Kadlub hit a two-run home run to give USF the 2-0 lead.
Martinez pitched 5.1 innings and allowed three hits. Antoinette Hill came in with two batters on in the sixth inning. The Dolphins scored three and took the lead for the first time since the first inning in game one.
The Dolphin's runs came off two singles and a USF error. Bailee Leistl reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh inning and then advanced to second on a groundout by Emilee Hanlon. A flyout would end the game.
Kansas 4, Tulsa 3 – Box Score
Kansas 9, Tulsa 1 – Box Score
The University of Tulsa softball team faced Kansas in a doubleheader on Wednesday as part of the Rock Chalk Challenge, dropping both games 4-3 and 9-1.
The Golden Hurricane is now 14-13 on the season. The Jayhawks improve to 16-11 with the two wins. Tulsa had originally been scheduled for four games this weekend as part of the challenge, but due to incoming inclement weather, the Hurricane's participation was limited to the pair of games on Wednesday.
Maura Moore (8-4) had the start in the circle for game one and took the loss. The sophomore went the distance, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five Jayhawks.
Kylee Nash (6-7) was credited with the loss in the second game. She pitched four and a third while allowing seven runs, four earned, on eight hits. Nash struck out two batters in the game. Riley Grant also got some time in the circle in the final inning.
At the plate, Haley Morgan had all of Tulsa's RBI in game one with a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to give the Hurricane a chance to draw level. Claira Skaggs recorded a double.
Abby Jones had Tulsa's lone RBI in the second game, blasting her first home run of the season in the fifth inning.
McNeese State 9, Houston 1 – Box Score
The University of Houston softball team dropped its midweek matchup to the McNeese Cowgirls, 9-1, in five innings on Wednesday evening at the Cowgirl Diamond.
Ja'Naiya Thomas and Paige Hulsey led the way for Houston's offense. Each went 2 for 3, while Hulsey scored a run. Brooke Lorenzo went 1 for 2 with an RBI.
McNeese took the lead in the first inning. A triple off the bat of Crislyne Moreno plated a pair for the Cowgirls. Moreno scored later in the inning on a passed ball to put McNeese up 3-0.
A single from Lorenzo that scored Hulsey got the Cougars on the board in the second, but McNeese quickly added another two runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to four.
The Cowgirls added another run in the third, with Kaylee Lopez scoring on a double-steal attempt to put McNeese up 6-1.
McNeese clinched the run-rule win in the fifth, stringing together five hits to score three runs, earning the 9-1 victory.
