IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly women’s basketball awards for the final week of the 2022-23 regular season.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Elena Tsineke, Sr., G, South Florida
Tsineke scored a game-high 28 points - the most by an American Athletic Conference player in the final week - to lead South Florida to an 85-55 win at Cincinnati and complete a 15-1 showing in conference play for the Bulls. Tsineke shot 71.4% from the field, making 10 of 14 shots, and was 6-of-7 from the free throw line while she added five assists in 31 minutes against the Bearcats. Tsineke enters The American Championship ranked second in the league in scoring at 18.0 points per game.
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Destiny Thomas, Fr., C, Memphis
Thomas was part of Memphis' balanced offense in the a 55-44 win against Tulane to help the Tigers secure the No. 2 seed in the American Athletic Conference Championship. She scored six points, going 3-for-3 from the field and added eight rebounds, a block and a steal to lead a defensive effort that helped Memphis to a 45-28 rebounding advantage and limited the Green Wave to 30.4% shooting.
HONOR ROLL
Britney Onyeje, Sr., G, Houston
Registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with four steals and three assists in a 62-55 win against Houston.
Jamirah Shutes, 5th, G, Memphis
Had a team-high 14 points with five rebounds and three assists in a 55-44 win against Tulane to secure the No. 2 seed in The American Championship.
Jessica Peterson, So., C, SMU
Scored a career-high 19 points with nine rebounds and three blocks in a 68-62 loss at Temple.
Tiarra East, So., F, Temple
Scored a game-high 21 points with six rebounds in a 68-62 win against SMU.
Temira Poindexter, So., F, Tulsa
Had team highs of 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in a 70-60 win against UCF.
