Temple, James Madison Claim Saturday Success

No. 12 James Madison and Temple found the win column Saturday as the Dukes reeled off their fifth straight victory while the Owls held off an inter-city rival.

NO. 12 JAMES MADISON 16, OHIO STATE 7
HARRISONBURG, Va. –
No. 12 James Madison lacrosse defeated Ohio State by a score of 16-7, finishing off a pair of wins against Big Ten opponents to extend its winning streak at Sentara Park Saturday afternoon.
 
The Dukes improved to 5-1 on the season, their best six-game start since 2020 while Ohio State dropped to 4-3.
 
The Dukes were led on offense by Isabella Peterson with five goals while Tai Jankowski netted four with a pair of assists. Each marked their fourth hat tricks of the season on Saturday, reaching them in the first half. A season-high eight different players scored on the afternoon as JMU out-shot the Buckeyes 33-23.
 
JMU’s defense held another opponent to single-digit goals, as Mairead Durkin added another two caused turnovers to her tally and nine different players grabbed at least one ground ball. Kat Buchanan made another six saves and allowed just six goals, marking her fifth straight performance with a 50% or better save percentage.
 
For Ohio State, Jamie Lasda and Caley O’Brien each scored a pair of goals while Lasda added three assists.
 
 
TEMPLE 13, SAINT JOSEPH'S 10
PHILADELPHIA –
Temple lacrosse (4-2, 0-0 AAC) defeated city foe, Saint Joseph's (1-5, 0-0 A10), 13-10 on Saturday afternoon, picking up their second home victory of the season. The Owls were led by Mackenzie Roth, who had five points on three goals and two assists. 

Saint Joseph's struck first, finding a goal a minute and half into play, but the Owls answered back, netting the next three goals of the game to advance to a 3-1 lead. Camryn Zavacky, Amelia Wright, and Roth all found the back of the net for the Cherry and White. 

The Hawks snuck one more in before the end of the quarter to cut the deficit to just one goal, but Belle Mastropietro opened the second quarter with a goal of her own off a Wright assist. 

Saint Joseph's went on a three-goal run to take the 5-4 advantage, which would be their final lead of the game. 
Wright tied it back up at five off a Zavacky dish before Julie Schickling found her first of the day from Mia Ciancio to give the Cherry and White the 6-5 lead as they entered the half. 

As the Owls opened play in the second half, Mastropietro converted on a free position, followed by a Roth finish, drawing out the Owl lead to 8-5. 

Saint Joseph's split the momentum with a goal, but Erin King and Roth continued to exert pressure, each netting a goal apiece for Temple, providing more cushion. 

Two Saint Joseph's goals closed out the third quarter at 10-8, but the Cherry and White kept their foot on the gas, finding goals from Ciancio, Mastropietro, and Wright with just five minutes remaining in play.

The Hawks added two more to close out the fourth quarter, but it would not be enough to inch back in, finishing the game 13-10. 


 NO. 3 NORTHWESTERN 24, VANDERBILT 7
EVANSTON, Ill. — 
Vanderbilt lacrosse felt to third-ranked Northwestern, 24-7, on Saturday afternoon at Ryan Fieldhouse. 
 
Vandy sophomore Josie Ward recorded her first-career hat trick on just five shots.
 
Northwestern opened the game with a quick goal, but Kemper Robinson responded less than 30 seconds later to even the score, 1-1. The Wildcats scored four unanswered before Ward found the back of the net for the first time this season. Vandy trailed 5-2 at the end of the first. 
 
Northwestern opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals from Samantha Smith but the Dores went on to score three straight from Molly Finlay, Paige Finneran and Ward to come within three, 5-8. Ward scored her third goal of the game at the 2:53 mark and Vanderbilt trailed 13-6 at the break.
 
The Wildcats held the Dores scoreless in the third outscoring Vandy 8-0 in the period. Bri Gross scored Vandy’s only goal of the second half mid-fourth quarter.
 
 
CAMPBELL 14, OLD DOMINION 7
BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
 The Old Dominion Women’s lacrosse (3-4) team fell to the Campbell Camels on Saturday, 14-7. Molly May led the Monarchs offensively scoring three goals. 
 
ODU started off the scoring when Danielle Dundas found May for a goal. Shortly after Dundas gave Old Dominion a 2-0 lead. Campbell responded cutting the Monarch lead in half before May scored her second goal of the first quarter. The Camels got two goals before the end of the first quarter to pull even at 3-3 going into the second quarter. 
 
The first 10 minutes of the second quarter went scoreless until Kate Stigsell gave the Monarchs a 4-3 lead. ODU added to its lead when May found the back of the net for the third time. Campbell would get two goals to even the game up at halftime 5-5. 
 
The third quarter was all Campbell as they scored seven goals in the quarter making it a 12-5 game going into the fourth.
