FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 8 Wichita State defeated No. 9 Temple, 71-61, in the first game of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship Monday, March 6 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
With the win, the Shockers will face No. 1 seed South Florida in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 7 at 1 p.m. ET/noon CT on ESPN+.
After the Shockers (17-13) grew its lead in the third quarter to 17 at 45-28 with 5:50 remaining, the Owls (12-17) stormed back to pull within three at 52-49 on a Tarriyonna Gary 3-pointer that beat the buzzer.
In the fourth quarter, Aleah Nelson tied the game on a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter, but the Shockers scored the next seven points. The Owls would only get as close as five the rest of the way.
DJ McCarthy led four Shockers in double figures with 18 points and six assists, while Trajata Colbert recorded 15 points. Shamaryah Duncan and Ambah Kowcun each added 11.
Nelson led all scorers with 22 points for the Owls.
