East Carolina, Houston Earn Series Wins Saturday

East Carolina and Houston both earned series wins in American Athletic Conference baseball action on Saturday, April 15.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Memphis baseball team won game two of its three-game series with UCF, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at John Euliano Park in Orlando. Left-handed pitcher Dalton Fowler went seven innings and earned the win and closer Dalton Kendrick picked up his NCAA-leading 10th save of the season.
 
With the win, Memphis improves to 19-17 (3-5 American) on the season. The Knights dropped to 19-16 (2-6) on the year with loss.
 
The Tigers got another great start on the mound from lefty Dalton Fowler. The senior threw seven innings and allowed a single run on five hits while striking out six to earn the win and move to 4-3 on the season. The southpaw has 31 strikeouts in his last three starts (19 innings) and ranked third in the country entering the game.

Austin Baskin hit his sixth home run of the season in the top of the third inning – a two-run shot that brought home RJ Jimerson after he doubled to give Memphis a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the seventh inning and Jake Curtis grinded out a walk to force in Jonah Sutton, extending their lead to 3-0.

UCF plated their only run of the contest in the eighth inning on a John Rhys Plumlee single. Closer Dalton Kendrick entered with one away in the inning and got the Tigers out of a bases-loaded jam. He stayed in the game and slammed the door in the ninth to pick up his NCAA-leading 10th save of the year.

Jacob Marlowe (3-5) took the loss for the Knights.

Houston 16, South Florida 10 - Box Score
HOUSTON – With a 16-10 win over South Florida, the Houston baseball team secured its third straight conference series win on Saturday afternoon at Schroeder Park.
 
The Cougars (20-15, 6-2) have won all three series against East Carolina, Wichita State and South Florida. Houston sophomore reliever Dan Wright (1-1) tallied his first win of the season throwing 2.0 shutout innings and retiring four batters. South Florida (15-21, 4-4) fought until the end but Bulls' starting pitcher Hunter Mink (6-3) recorded the loss after giving up 10 hits on 10 runs in 2.1 innings of work.
 
Four different Cougars tallied home runs in the game including starting pitcher Malachi Lot, Zach Arnold, Anthony Tulimero and Alex Lopez. It was the ninth game this season where the Cougars have tallied multiple home runs.

Arnold and Justin Murray extended their reached-base streaks to 31 straight games. Arnold has reached base in every single game he has played in while Murray has found his way on base in every game since his second Cougar appearance.

Arnold went a perfect 4 for 4 on the day with four runs and four RBI. The junior reached base on every one of his at bats which included two walks. His four runs set a career high while the four hits tied a career-high.
Both Malachi Lott and Zach Arnold were a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

East Carolina 10, Cincinnati 0 (7 innings) - Box Score
GREENVILLE, N.C. – No. 9 East Carolina made quick work of Cincinnati Saturday afternoon, using a complete-game shutout by senior RHP Carter Spivey to post a 10-0 seven-inning victory at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
 
The Pirates (27-8, 6-2 American) clinched their eighth weekend series of the season and kept pace with Houston for the top spot in the American Athletic Conference standings. Meanwhile, the Bearcats (15-21, 3-5) failed to score for the first time this campaign.
 
The crisp two-hour game marked the second run-rule win of league play for ECU as the Pirates have won seven in a row and five-straight AAC contests.
 
Spivey (4-1) was extremely efficient in his longest outing of the season, requiring just 83 pitches to complete the shutout. He struck out three batters and scattered four hits with no walks in his third quality start of 2023. Chase Hopewell (1-4) surrendered seven runs on nine hits in just four innings in the losing effort.
 
Lane Hoover and Joey Berini sparked East Carolina's 14-hit outburst with three base knocks each. Hoover added a pair of runs scored while Berini finished with two RBI for good measure. Josh Moylan extended his hitting streak to seven games with a 2-for-4 performance that included a run scored and three RBI as well as his seventh home run of the season.
