East Carolina 4, Memphis 2 – Box Score
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team outlasted Memphis 4-2 in the second game of its conference series with the Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium. Tomorrow's season finale has been moved up to 11:30 a.m. due to Memphis' travel arrangements.
Taylor Edwards went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and Taudrea Sinnie tallied a triple for the Pirates (25-19, 3-8 The American) who jumped out to an early 4-0 lead due to Memphis miscues and drawing walks to load the bases in the bottom of the first inning.
The Tigers (7-34, 1-10 The AMerican) would bring in Hallie Siems at the end of the first inning to hold ECU to only three hits for the reminder of the game.
After holding the Tigers scoreless through four innings, Memphis would score two runs off of Payton Hudson with a single RBI in the fifth and a home run from Linsley Hargis in the sixth.
The Pirates would reinsert Jordan Hatch in the circle and the sophomore would regain control of the game and not allow another hit from the Tigers to give the Pirates their second win in a row.
Hatch (11-8) tossed seven strikeouts and gave up no hits in 4.2 innings of work for the win while Drue Thomas (0-1) took her first loss with four runs and six walks.
Tulsa 5, UCF 4 – Box Score
TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa softball team trailed the UCF Knights heading into the bottom of the seventh but scored three runs to win 5-4 in front of 524 cheering fans at the Collins Family Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The win helped Tulsa to improve to 17-22, 3-5 in The American. The Golden Hurricane also snapped a five-game losing streak in conference play and six games overall. UCF fell to 26-19 and 5-3 in The American.
Tulsa tied the game in the seventh on a two-RBI single from Haley Morgan. Four batters later, Claira Skaggs stepped in with the bases loaded and two outs. The sophomore was patient at the plate and drew a five pitch walk to bring in Tara Hall and send the Hurricane team and fans into celebration.
Kylee Nash (7-11) was credited with the win after going a full 7.0 innings. The junior fanned seven batters and allowed four runs, only one earned, on 10 hits. She also drew an important walk in the seventh inning as a batter.
Grace Jewell (8-6) took the loss after surrendering the lead late in the seventh. She tossed 6.0 innings and allowed all five Tulsa runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four. After a game-tying single, Angelina DeVoe entered the circle and finished the game. She got two outs and then walked two, which included the winning run.
Morgan went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Imani Edwards also had a two-hit performance, driving in a run early in the contest. Kailyn Bearpaw and Skaggs each picked up an RBI in the win.
Wichita State 5, Houston 4 – Box Score
WICHITA, Kan. – No. 20 Wichita State scored the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the series with Houston behind a 5-4 comeback win Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.
Wichita State (36-7, 10-1 The American) upped its win streak to 12, tied for the second longest in school history, and with UCF's loss at Tulsa is a full two games ahead of everyone in the conference standings.
Six of Wichita State's nine hits came from Sydney McKinney, Addison Barnard and Bailey Urban. The trio had two hits apiece, while Urban added the two go-ahead RBIs. Sami Hood and Camryn Compton each had a single and an RBI. Krystin Nelson scored twice to go with a single.
Lauren Howell threw 4.0 innings in the start, earning a no decision. She allowed four runs, only one earned, on five hits and four walks. Alex Aguilar was superb out of the bullpen. She allowed only one hit in 3.0 innings and struck out two to record her 10th win of the season.
Wichita State had the bats working early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on three hits. Barnard started things off with a double off the very top of the wall in center, missing a home run by inches. A Lauren Lucas walk made way for back-to-back RBI singles from Hood and Compton.
Houston cut the lead in half in the top of the second on an RBI double. Barnard threw out a runner at the plate to end the inning with the lead intact. She had two outfield assists, both at the plate, after two innings.
Wichita State got the run back in the bottom half of the second on a McKinney stolen base and throwing error that allowed Nelson to come home from third.
After a scoreless third, Houston grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth behind three runs. An error and two walks led to a sac fly and two-run double, putting the Cougars in front, 4-3.
The bats went quiet for the Shockers up until the bottom of the sixth when the Shockers loaded the bases. With two outs and a runner on first, McKinney singled and Barnard walked to load the bags for Urban. Urban promptly drove a 2-1 pitch off the wall in right to score Nelson and McKinney for what proved to be the game-winning runs.
Houston had one last chance in the top of the seventh. A leadoff single, followed by a Wichita State error and passed ball, led the Shockers to intentionally walking the No. 2 hole hitter, Turyia Coleman. With the bases loaded, Aguilar induced a shallow pop-up in right that McKinney was just able to get to. The baserunner on second thought the ball would get over McKinney's head and was a good 15-feet off the base, allowing McKinney to complete a huge double play. The next batter would fly out to left to end the game.
