SMU Holds The Team Lead After Round One Of The 2023 American Women’s Golf Championship

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – SMU was the top team in round one of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship on Monday at Southern Hills Plantation Club. The Mustangs fired a team score of 12-under 276 to take a five-stroke lead following the opening 18 holes. Tulsa is in second place after day with at 7-under-par 281.
 
The average score on the first day of play at Southern Hills Plantation Club was 74.10 over the 50 completed rounds. A total of 19 of the 50 players in action in round one finished at par or better, including 15 under par showings.
 
SMU, the second seed in the tournament, saw all four scorers finish under-par for a first-round score of 276 (-12). Michelle Zhang turned out a round one best 6-under 66.  Not far behind was Ashley Chow, finishing with a 4-under par, while Mackenzie Lee and Ellie Szeryk both posted a score of 71 (-1).
 
Tulsa saw a foursome of players shoot under-par the 72-par course, led by Jenni Roller’s 3-under 69 to end round one in second place.  Sydney Seigel posted a score of 2-under par, while Lilly Thomas and Lovisa Gunnar both shot 71 (-1) for the round. As a team, Tulsa finished with a first-round score of 281 (-7).
 
Houston came in tied for third place as a team after firing a first round 284 (-4).  Nicole Abelar and Moa Svedenskiold turned in matching round of 70 (-2), while Alexa Saldana and Annie Kim shot even pars.
 
South Florida joined Houston in third place, shooting a 284 (-4) in the first round. Melanie Green shot the second-best round of the day with a 5-under 67, while Leonor Medeiros was right behind with a 4-under 68.  Juliana Camargo shot a 74, while Lauren Heinlein shot a 75.
 
UCF finished round one in fifth place, shooting 287 (-1) as a team. Jess Baker shot 2-under 70 to lead the pack, while Anna Nordfors shot 71 (-1), and Pimpisa Sisutham and Tunrada Piddon both posted a score of 73 (+1).
 
Teams will resume the second round of the 2023 American Women’s Golf Championship on Tuesday with tee times expected to begin at 8 a.m. (ET).
