SMU, UCF To Battle for American Women's Tennis Championship Saturday

ORLANDO, Fla. – Top-seeded SMU and No. 2-seeded UCF continued. to steamroll through the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship as both teams registered 4-0 semifinal wins Friday at the USTA National Campus.
 
SMU and UCF have both won their first two matches by 4-0 scores, while neither team has dropped a set through their first two contests.
 
The wins set the stage for what promises to be a thriller between The American's two highest-ranked teams for the American Athletic Conference title and automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. SMU enters the match at No. 35 in the April 18 ITA rankings, while UCF is two spots behind at No. 37. 
 
The match also allows for a showdown at the top of the singles ladder between The American's two highest-ranked players as UCF's Marie Mattel is No. 38 in the most recent ITA rankings, while SMU's Hadley Doyle is No. 80.

Hadley Doyle and Taylor Johnson contributed wins in both singles and doubles as top-seeded SMU advanced to the American Athletic Conference Championship Final with a 4-0 win against No. 4-seeded Tulsa Friday.
 
The Mustangs are in the championship match of The American tournament for the second time in the nine-year history of the event and the first time since 2018, when the Mustangs finished as the runner-up to Tulsa.
 
Doyle paired with Drew Morris for a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, while Johnson joined Lana Mayor for a 6-1 win at No. 2 to put SMU on the board.
 
Johnson was first to finish in singles as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2, while Doyle gave SMU a 3-0 lead with her 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1.
 
The Mustangs clinched it when Jackie Nylander was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at the No. 4 position.
 
Doyle improved to a combined 4-0 in The American Championship as she won both of her matches for the second consecutive day.
 
 
UCF 4, Memphis 0
Records: UCF (11-10), Memphis (10-14)
 
No. 2-seeded UCF won three singles matches and straight sets and cruised in the doubles round to take a 4-0 win against No. 6-seeded Memphis Friday in the semifinal round.
 
The Knights move on to the championship final of The American Championship for the third time in the last four seasons as UCF looks for its third American title.
 
Sophia Biolay, Jaleesa Leslie and Anique Kattenberg were winners in both singles and doubles to lead the Knights. Biolay joined Marie Mattel for a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles and she delivered a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.
 
Leslie and Kattenberg played at No. 3 doubles and likewise gained a 6-0 win to clinch the first team point for the Knights. Kattenberg went on to score a 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles before Leslie closed out the win with a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 5.
