HOUSTON – Rice placed its two players in the semifinal round of the women’s bracket, while Tulsa’s two players advanced to the semifinal round in the men’s bracket on the second day of competition Friday at the 2024 American Athletic Conference Individual Tennis Championships at the George R. Brown Tennis Center at Rice University.
The Owls picked up quarterfinal wins in the women’s bracket from No. 4-seeded Divna Ratkovic and unseeded Darya Schwartzman Friday, while Tulsa got straight-set wins on the men’s side from No. 5-seeded Timothy Carlsson Seger and unseeded Alex Okonkwo.
Charlotte’s Sara Suchankova picked up her third straight-set win of the tournament Friday to advance to a semifinal matchup against Ratkovic. Suchankova was a 6-4, 6-1 winner against UTSA’s Ekua Youri in the quarterfinals.
Schwartzman’s path to Sunday’s championship match will have to go through the highest remaining seed on the women’s side as No. 2 Leonie Moeller of Memphis took a straight-set win in the quarterfinals against UAB’s Gresi Bajri.
Carlsson Seger is the only seeded men’s player to reach the semifinals as he took a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win against South Florida’s Hugo Car Friday. Carlsson Seger will battle Danijal Muminovic of UTSA, who knocked off No. 8 John Bernard of Florida Atlantic for his third win in the tournament.
Okonkwo won in straight sets for the third consecutive match as he topped Martim Marujo of Temple in the quarterfinals. Okonkwo will face Tulane’s Luka Petrovic, who was a straight-set winner against No. 2-seeded Tiago Torres of UTSA.
Rice advanced its women’s and men’s doubles tandems to Saturday’s semifinals as well. The No. 2-seeded women’s duo of Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez was an 8-3 pro-set winner Friday, while the No. 2-seeded men’s tandem of Arthus de la Bassetiere and Kameer Kapasi cruised to an 8-1 quarterfinal win.
The top three seeds in women’s doubles all advanced to the semifinals as top-seeded Millie-Mae Matthews and Malwina Rowinska of Florida Atlantic will face unseeded Theodora Chantava and Giorgia Roselli of Wichita State. The other side of the bracket has Schwartzman and Martinez of Rice against No. 3-seeded Mariana Manyoma and Ana Naranjo Martinez of Tulsa.
The men’s doubles bracket saw the top four seeds advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Charlotte’s Vasco Prata and Matias Iturbe, the No. 9-ranked tandem nationally, will face No. 4-seeded Kristof Minarik and Alejandro Jacome in the semifinals, while de la Bassetiere and Kapasi will battle No. 3-seeded Luka Petrovic and Luc Joeijmans of Tulane.
Saturday’s doubles semifinals will begin at 9 a.m. CT, while singles play is scheduled for noon CT. Consolation rounds in men’s and women’s singles will also conclude Saturday.
