Strong Start Pushes Pirates Past Florida Atlantic, 49-14

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Katin Houser accounted for six touchdowns as East Carolina raced to a 35-7 halftime lead on its way to a 49-14 win against Florida Atlantic Thursday night at Dowdy-Ficklin Stadium.

The Pirates improved to 2-0 under interim head coach Blake Harrell, who has seen East Carolina combine for 105 points and 1,081 yards of offense in the two wins. East Carolina stands at 5-4 overall and 3-2 in American Athletic Conference play.

East Carolina scored touchdowns on its first three drives and needed only two plays from scrimmage to take a lead it would not relinquish. Houser connected with Chase Sowell for a 50-yard touchdown to stake the Pirates to a 7-0 lead just 24 seconds into the game and he found Winston Wright Jr. for a pair of TD passes before the first quarter had ended as East Carolina led 21-0 after 15 minutes.

Houser closed the first half by rushing for a 35-yard touchdown, giving East Carolina a 35-7 lead. He capped his night with a 46-yard TD pass in the third quarter and a 2-yard score in the fourth to make it 49-7.

Houser went 17-for-22 for 343 yards and five touchdowns and added 52 rushing yards with a TD. Anthony Smith had three catches for 120 yards and a score, while Wright had 80 yards and two TDs on three receptions.

Florida Atlantic saw starting quarterback Cam Fancher leave the game with an apparent shoulder injury in the first half. Freshman Kasen Weisman went 20-for-35 for 188 yards and two touchdowns off the bench. The Owls fell to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in The American.
