NEW ORLEANS — Jake Retzlaff threw a pair of touchdown passes in the final two minutes, rallying Tulane to a dramatic 24–17 comeback victory over Army West Point on Saturday afternoon at Yulman Stadium .
After Army took a 17–10 lead with just under six minutes remaining, Retzlaff led two long scoring drives to stun the Black Knights.
He first capped a 75-yard march with a 12-yard strike to Bryce Bohanon to tie it at 17–17 with 1:54 left, then, following a defensive stop, delivered the game-winner — a 26-yard touchdown to Shazz Preston with 27 seconds remaining .
Retzlaff completed 22 of 29 passes for 261 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, while adding 62 yards rushing and a 37-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter .
Preston caught five passes for 86 yards and a score, Bohanon added five for 51 yards, and Anthony Brown-Stephenschipped in five for 52 yards as Tulane (5-1, 2-0 American Conference) gained 402 total yards on just 58 plays.
Army (3-3, 2-2 American) dominated possession — 38:49 to 21:11 — and out-rushed Tulane 233–141, but couldn’t hold off the late surge.
Quarterback Cale Hellums powered the Black Knights’ triple-option attack, carrying 39 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns and completing 7 of 10 passes for 125 yards .
Army went 4-for-4 on fourth down and 6-for-15 on third, controlling tempo for most of the game.
After a 3–3 halftime tie, Hellums’ 1-yard run capped an 80-yard drive midway through the third quarter for a 10–3 lead. Retzlaff’s 37-yard touchdown run tied it quickly, but Hellums plunged in again from the 1 midway through the fourth to make it 17–10 before Tulane’s decisive rally .
Tulane’s defense forced the game’s only sack — Jordan Norman’s 3-yard takedown — and limited Army to 4.9 yards per play despite the heavy workload.
Linebacker Chris Rodgers led the Green Wave with 10 tackles, while E’zaiah Shine and Gerrod Henderson added eight each .
Army linebacker Kalib Fortner posted nine tackles, and safety Casey Larkin added an interception. Kicker Dawson Jones hit a 43-yard field goal in the second quarter but missed from 44 earlier.
