CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
IRVING, Texas – Rice captured the 2025 American Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday, February 22, at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium in Dallas.
Heading into the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, Rice led with a 5.5 point lead over second-place FIU. In the race, the Panthers finished second in 3:19.68, but Rice placed fourth in 3:21.55 to clinch the conference title by 1.5 points. Rice finished with 1,475.5 points to FIU’s 1,474 points. Tulane placed third with 1,234.5 points, followed by East Carolina (1,177), North Texas (1,160) and Florida Atlantic (1,008).
The Tulane foursome of Rafaela Sumida, Olcaytu Hatipoglu, Catherine Russo and Maya Wilson won the 400 free relay in 3:17.66. East Carolina was third in 3:20.98.
In the first final of the evening, Rice went 1-2-3 in the 1,650-yard freestyle with Ella Dyson becoming a 3-time champion in the event with a time of 16:20.26. Freshman of the Year Ava Portello touched second in 16:23.43, while Amelia Kane was third in 16:34.21.
Rice’s Ava Hamblett out-touched Florida Atlantic’s Meg Drover-Smith by 0.07 in the 200-yard backstroke. Hamblett finished in a time of 1:55.81 to become Rice’s first winner in the event as part of The American, while Drover-Smith finished in 1:55.88. Tulane’s Andrea Zeebe was third in 1:56.30.
Nicole Frank of FIU, the Championship’s Most Outstanding Swimmer, won her third individual event of the Championship, claiming the 200-yard breastroke in a time of 2:10.49. East Carolina’s Kaylee Hamblin placed second in a time of 2:11.72, while FIU’s Ingrid Huszar touched third in 2:12.50.
Tulane’s Maya Wilson captured the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 48.52, Shaena McCloud and Indra Vandenbussche of North Texas finished second and third in 49.24 and 49.75, respectively. It was Wilson’s second individual event win of the Championship, after winning the 200 freestyle on Friday.
Arielle Hayon from Rice won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:57.63 for her second event win of the meet. She won the 100-yard butterfly on Friday. Florida Atlantic’s Dolores Margni placed second in 1:59.57, while North Texas’ Kailey Turner was third in 2:00.13.
In the final diving event of the meet, East Carolina’s Frida Zuniga Guzman broke the Championship record on platform with a score of 310.80. FIU’s Brooke Megdall was second with a total score of 247.60, while her Panther teammate Kristina Keenan placed third with 245.45 points.
North Texas’ Kamryn Wong was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Diver after winning two individual events and was a part of the Mean Green’s Team Diving Event win. North Texas’ Stephanie O’Callaghan was named the Diving Coach of the Year.
Tulane’s Amanda Caldwell was honored as the Swimming Coach of the Year after the Mean Green earned their first top-3 finish at the Championship since 2022.
