South Florida Is Top Seed For American Men's Tennis Championship

IRVING, Texas – South Florida’s men’s tennis team has earned the No. 1 seed for the 2025 American Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Championship, which begins Thursday at the Leftwich Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Memphis.
 
The men’s championship begins with Thursday’s three first-round matches and continues through the Sunday, April 20, final. The winner of the men’s championship will earn The American’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Tennis Championships.
 
Seeds for the championships are determined by the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings through matches of Sunday, April 13. 
 
South Florida earned the No. 1 seed after the Bulls went 19-3 in the regular season, including a 4-0 mark against American Athletic Conference teams. The Bulls won five of the first six American titles, but will be looking for their first first championship since 2019. South Florida begins its tournament run Friday at 2 p.m. ET/10 a.m. CT against the winner of Thursday’s first-round match between No. 9-seeded UAB and No. 8 Wichita State.
 
Memphis, the No. 2 seed, is looking for its first American title after the Tigers finished as last year’s runner-up. Memphis will face either No. 10 Temple or No. 7 Charlotte Friday at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT in the quarterfinals. 
 
Florida Atlantic is the No. 3 seed in the tournament in its first season in The American. The Owls, who have won nine of their last 10 dual matches, will play a quarterfinal match Friday against either No. 11-seeded Tulane or No. 6 UTSA.
 
The No. 4 seed in the tournament will be Tulsa, which has won five of its last six matches. The Golden Hurricane will take on No. 5 Rice in the quarterfinals.

Championship Notes
South Florida has won five of the first nine American Athletic Conference titles, but is looking for its first title since 2019. The Bulls have gone 22-5 all-time in The American Championship.
 
The only current American teams other than South Florida to win a the conference championship are Tulane, which claimed the 2018 crown, and Charlotte, which won in 2024.
 
The No. 1-seeded team has won five American Athletic Conference titles. South Florida won as the top seed in 2015, 2016 and 2017, UCF claimed the championship from the No. 1 position in 2021 and SMU defended its top seed in 2022.
 
The highest-ranked singles player in The American, as of the April 8 rankings, was South Florida’s Hugo Car, who was ranked No. 63. Florida Atlantic’s John Bernard is ranked No. 100, Tulsa’s Alex Okonkwo (The American’s 2024 individual champion) was No. 107, UTSA’s Tiago Torres is No. 108, Memphis’ Conor Gannon is No. 124, and Tulsa’s Luis Felipe Miguel is No. 125.
 
The American’s highest-ranked doubles tandem is Hugo Car/Ettore Danesi of South Florida who were No. 65 in last week’s ITA rankings. They lead a group of five American Athletic Conference doubles pairings in the national rankings.
