MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Top-seeded Florida Atlantic remained the only unbeaten team in the nation and host Memphis rallied for a thrilling quarterfinal win to cap Friday’s action in the American Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Leftwich Tennis Center.
Florida Atlantic and Memphis will be joined in the semifinals by Tulsa, which is in the last four of the tournament for the ninth time in 10 years, and Rice, which advanced for the second time in as many years as a member of the American Conference.

Florida Atlantic 4, UTSA 0

The No. 1 seed in the American Championship looked the part in its tournament opener Friday morning as Florida Atlantic remained the only unbeaten team in NCAA Division I with a 4-0 win against UTSA in a quarterfinal matchup.
The Owls, who improved to 16-0 with the win, took three singles matches in straight sets and won the doubles point to advance to a semifinal matchup against No. 4-seeded Tulsa Saturday at 10 a.m. CT.
Panna Bartha and Lara Smejkal won in both singles and doubles for Florida Atlantic. Bartha was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles, while she paired with Lexi Silna for a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles. Smejkal took a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 3 singles and Malwina Rowinska for a 6-2 victory at the top doubles position.
Friday’s match was the first meeting between Florida Atlantic and UTSA, which have been members of the same conference since 2013.
Tulsa 4, Wichita State 3
Records: Tulsa (18-7), Wichita State (13-9)
Lily Hutchings’ three-set win at No. 3 singles broke a 3-3 tie and sent No. 4-seeded Tulsa to a 4-3 win against No. 5-seeded Wichita State Friday afternoon in a quarterfinal match.
The victory puts Tulsa in the semifinal round of the American Championship for the ninth time in 10 years and improves the Golden Hurricane to 19-6 all-time in the conference tournament.
Hutchings took a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win in the only singles match to go to three sets.
Wichita State held a 3-2 lead after Giorgia Roselli’s 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, but Tulsa’s Ana Naranjo Martinez answered with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 5 to tie the match.
Tulsa’s Maria Berlanga Bandera won a matchup of nationally ranked players as the No. 86-ranked Golden Hurricane standout topped No. 120 Xin Tong Wang of Wichita State, 7-5, 6-1.
Tulsa will face top-seeded Florida Atlantic in Saturday’s semifinals.
Rice 4, Tulane 2

Rice’s Darya Schwartzman held off a late charge from Tulane’s Campbell Ricci at No. 1 singles to give the Owls a 4-2 win against the Green Wave Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round.
Schwartzman won her first set 6-0, but Ricci battled back to force a third set after she won a second-set tiebreaker. Schwartzman had enough in the tank down the stretch, however, to take a 6-0, 7-6 (4), 6-3 win and end a match last lasted more than three-and-a-half hours.
Tulane had built a 1-0 lead with a pair of doubles wins, but Rice took control in a singles round that saw three sets decided by tiebreakers, two others decided by 7-5 scores and two more that went to 6-4.
Divna Ratkovic was a winner in both singles and doubles for the Owls as she took a 6-0, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles and was a 6-2 winner at No. 3 doubles with Anushka Ashar.
Tulane saw its two team points come from Leigh Van Zyl, who took a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 decision at No. 3 singles and a 6-4 win with Ricci at No. 1 doubles.
Rice moves on to the American Championship semifinals Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
Memphis 4, Charlotte 2
Records: Memphis (8-13), Charlotte (20-5)
No. 6-seeded Memphis won the last three singles courts in play to rally for a 4-2 win against No. 3-seeded Charlotte Friday night in the quarterfinal round.
The Tigers became the first lower-seeded team to win in the women’s championship, as Memphis moves on to the semifinals to face No. 2-seeded Rice Saturday at 2 p.m. CT. Memphis will make its fourth consecutive appearance in the semifinals and will look for its third championship match appearance in four years.
Memphis found itself off to a 1-0 start after winning the doubles point, but the 49ers put to quick singles victories on the board as Amira Badwai and Prisca Abbas both won in straight sets.
Alice Amendola tied the match at 2-2 with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, and Sofia Mykhailets gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead by pulling out a second-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (3).
Leonnie Moeller clinched it for the Tigers as she edged Sara Suchankova in the first set before closing out in the second for a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win.
