MANHATTAN, Kan. — Quarterback Cale Hellums ran for two touchdowns, including the go-ahead 14-yarder with 2:52 remaining, as Army rallied past Kansas State 24-21 on Saturday night at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
Hellums powered the Black Knights (1-1) with 124 rushing yards on 41 carries and added a 2-yard touchdown pass to Brady Anderson on the final play of the first half. He engineered a pair of long scoring drives in the fourth quarter — Dawson Jones’ 35-yard field goal cut the deficit to four, and the decisive 56-yard march ended with Hellums’ second rushing score.
Army dominated possession, holding the ball for more than 40 minutes while converting 10 of 22 third downs and 6 of 7 fourth downs. Noah Short chipped in 61 rushing yards and a 52-yard reception, and Anderson led with 64 receiving yards.
Kansas State (1-2, 0-1 Big 12) saw Bryce Noernberg return a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to reclaim the lead, but the Wildcats’ offense was stifled in the second half. Quarterback Avery Johnson threw for 172 yards and a touchdown to Jaron Tibbs but was intercepted once and went scoreless after halftime.
The Army defense held K-State to 75 rushing yards on 18 attempts and came up with a late interception by Collin Matteson to seal the win. Andon Thomas led the Black Knights with nine tackles.
Army finished with 332 total yards on 82 plays, compared to just 247 for Kansas State.
