ATLANTA — Sutton Smith and Makari Bodiford each ran for two touchdowns, and Memphis extended two notable streaks with a 38-16 win over Georgia State on Saturday night at Center Parc Stadium.
The Tigers (2-0) notched their 12th straight victory against a Sun Belt opponent and scored at least 20 points for the 42nd consecutive game — the longest active streak in FBS football.
Smith opened the scoring with a 16-yard run before Bodiford added touchdowns of 7 and 1 yards, the latter coming late in the third quarter to make it 31-16. Quarterback Brendon Lewis was efficient, completing 16 of 20 passes for 196 yards, while also running for a 5-yard score early in the third.
The defense capped the night as DJ Ward intercepted a pass and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown in the closing seconds. Memphis finished with 205 rushing yards and 401 total yards.
Georgia State (0-2) took a brief first-quarter lead on Cameran Brown’s 22-yard touchdown run and regained it in the second on his 44-yard strike to Jacari Robinson. But the Panthers were shut out after halftime and limited to 49 rushing yards on 27 attempts. TJ Finley threw for 201 yards but was sacked four times, while Brown added 139 yards passing.
Jamari Hawkins led Memphis with 79 receiving yards, and Smith totaled 164 all-purpose yards. The Tigers’ defense produced 10 tackles for loss and three sacks, with Sam Brumfield and Drue Watts each registering one.
