MOBILE, Ala. — Zuberi Mobley rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns, and Tulane held off a furious late rally to beat South Alabama 33-31 on Saturday night at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
Mobley scored from 16 yards out late in the first quarter and added a 28-yard burst early in the fourth to put the Green Wave (2-0) ahead 33-17. Jake Retzlaff threw a 5-yard touchdown to Johnny Pascuzzi and ran for another score, while Patrick Durkin kicked field goals of 50 and 34 yards.
The Jaguars (1-1) stormed back behind quarterback Bishop Davenport, who threw two touchdowns to Devin Voisin, including a 26-yarder with 59 seconds left. But the two-point conversion failed, and Tulane recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal it. Davenport finished 17 of 24 for 231 yards and two scores, while Kentrel Bullock rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Tulane outrushed South Alabama 241-190, improving coach Jon Sumrall to 27-0 in his career when his teams hold the edge on the ground. The Green Wave converted 9 of 17 third downs and controlled possession for nearly 35 minutes.
Voisin caught eight passes for 152 yards, and Jamari Scott added 45 receiving yards for South Alabama. Defensively, Dickson Agu paced Tulane with 11 tackles, and Harvey Dyson III and Greg Henderson each had half a sack.
Durkin’s 50-yard field goal just before halftime gave Tulane a 10-point cushion, and the Wave’s defense forced two turnovers to withstand South Alabama’s late push.
