Breanna Stewart paced four Huskies in double-figures as No. 1/1 UConn topped No. 7/7 Baylor, 66-55 Monday evening in Waco. The victory snapped the Lady Bears’ 69-game home winning streak.
Stewart had 18 points and 11 rebounds and finished a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe. Bria Hartley added 17 points and Moriah Jefferson chipped in 13 points and five assists with no turnovers. Jefferson also had a game-high four steals. Stefanie Dolson had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Odyssey Sims, the nation’s leading scorer who entered Monday’s contest averaging 31.8 points per game, was held to 20 points on 4-for-25 shooting.
After trailing 36-27 at the break, Baylor cut the lead to 50-49 with just under 11 minutes left to play. Stewart’s jumper at the 10:33 mark sparked a 16-6 run for UConn and sealed the win for the Huskies.
Conference play resumes on Tuesday with two games around the league. Temple hosts SMU at Noon at the Liacouras Center while Rutgers travels to Memphis for an 8 p.m. contest. The Temple-SMU game will air live on The American Digital Network.
