PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The National Football League announced Wednesday that Terry McAulay, the Coordinator of Football Officiating for the American Athletic Conference, has been chosen as the referee for Super Bowl XLVIII Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium.
McAulay earned the assignment through the league's evaluation system in which the highest-rated officials at each position with the required experience are chosen to work the game. Super Bowl officials must have at least five years of NFL experience and previous playoff assignments.
Completing his 16th season as an NFL official, McAulay also worked Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, Fla., when the New England Patriots beat the Philadelphia Eagles; and Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Fla., when the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals. McAulay, who has undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science from LSU and Johns Hopkins respectively, has officiated 12 playoff games, including two Super Bowls and six NFL conference championship games.
McAulay also was the referee in the 1998 BCS National Championship. He joined the conference in July of 2008.
Other members of the Super Bowl officiating crew are umpire Carl Paganelli, head linesman Jim Mello, line judge Tom Symonette, field judge Scott Steenson, side judge Dave Wyant, back judge Steve Freeman, replay official Earnie Frantz and replay assistant Brian Matoren.
In all, the crew has 110 years of NFL officiating experience and 76 postseason game assignments.
