The American Today: UConn, Louisville Improve to 2-0 in Conference Play

No. 1/1 UConn and No. 7/7 Louisville improved to 2-0 in conference play while SMU picked up its first league win during action around the American Athletic Conference on Wednesday.

Stefanie Dolson had her sixth double-double of the year leading UConn to a 77-49 win at UCF. The senior had 25 points and 12 rebounds and shot 11-for-14 from the field. Breanna Stewart added 11 points and a game-high six assists for the Huskies. The Knights got a game-high 28 points from Briahanna Jackson. She shot 11-for-22 from the field and made a career-high six shots from beyond the arc.

UCF set a new single-game record in attendance as 3,492 turned out for the first meeting between the two programs at CFE Arena.

Asia Taylor led four Louisville players in double figures as the Cardinals defeated Temple 77-68 in Philadelphia.

Taylor finished with 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting. She added eight rebounds and three steals in 29 minutes of action. Shoni Schimmel had 15 points and Bria Smith chipped in 13 points and four steals. Sara Hammond contributed 11 points and six rebounds.

Natasha Thames (24 points) and Monaye Merritt (14 points) had career games for Temple.  Erica Covile added 14 points and eight rebounds and Thames led the team in rebounding with nine.

Keena Mayes reached 1,000 career-points in SMU’s 54-43 win at Cincinnati. The senior had 15 points on the day on 6-for-14 shooting from the field. Akil Simpson added 13 points while Korina Baker paced the team on the defensive end with a career-high seven rebounds.

Alyesha Lovett led three Bearcats in double figure scoring with 17 points. Jeanise Randolph and Jasmine Whitfield added 10 points each.

Conference play continues on Saturday, Jan. 4 with five games around the league. Rutgers and Houston kick off the action with a Noon ET contest.
