The American Today: UCF, Tulsa Pick Up Tuesday Wins

UCF topped Jacksonville in Orlando and Tulsa outlasted Texas Southern in Houston during women's basketball action around The American on Tuesday.

UCF 71, Jacksonville 59

A big night from its bench and a solid rebounding effort helped UCF to a 71-59 win over Jacksonville Tuesday night at CFE Arena.

Sophomore Makenzi Reasor netted a career-high and game-high 16 points in 19 minutes to lead three Knights in double figures. She was joined by freshman Fifi Ndour's career-high 10 points and sophomore Zykira Lewis, who hit the double-digit mark (12 points) for the fourth-straight game.

A foul heavy first-half allowed the Knights to capitalize at the free throw line, where they converted 15-of-18 from the stripe. UCF held a 36-28 lead at the break. Although the Dolphins (1-4) continually tried to chip away at UCF's lead, the Knights (3-1) were able to come up with timely buckets to stifle their momentum. UCF led by as much as 14 points with 12 minutes left to play in regulation.

Tulsa 67, Texas Southern 64 (OT)

Ashley Clark, Erika Wakefield and Mariah Turner all scored in double figures to lead Tulsa to a 67-64 overtime win against Texas Southern at HPE Arena in Houston, Texas. The Golden Hurricane moved to 2-2 on the season, while the Tigers fell to 0-4 overall.

Clark had a game-best 22 points and led Tulsa with eight rebounds, six of them coming on the defensive end. Wakefield added 13 points, five assists and three steals, while Turner tallied 10 points. 

Tulsa led Texas Southern for the majority of the first half, but the Tigers tied things up at 24-all with 3:33 left to play. TSU outscored TU, 9-1, to close out the half with a 33-25 lead. The Golden Hurricane inched back into the game, outscoring Texas Southern, 18-10, to start the second half and tied the game at 43-all with 11:53 on the clock. In the overtime period, the Golden Hurricane had a 7-4 lead in points, including four points from Turner, two from Wakefield and one from Reid.
