The American Today: Temple, Tulane Move to 2-0 in Conference Play

Temple 77, SMU 64

Erica Covile had a career-high 24 points and tied a career-high with 13 rebounds as Temple picked up its second-straight American Athletic Conference victory, a 77-64 win against SMU at McGonigle Hall. The Owls improved to 2-0 in the conference and 6-8 overall with the win while the Mustangs fell to 0-2 in the American and 4-9 overall.

Covile went 8-15 from the field, wrapping up her third-straight double-double and fourth in the last five games. Feyonda Fitzgerald added her second-straight double-digit scoring performance, putting up 22 points while going 12-for-14 from the free-throw line. SMU's Alicia Froling led three Mustangs in double figures with 20 points, while Kiara Perry and Destynee Hives-McCray each chipped in with 13. SMU cut Temple’s lead to nine, 62-53, with 5:57 to go after Froling hit a layup. The Owls responded with five consecutive points to put the game out of reach for the Mustangs.

NR/RV Tulane 70, Houston 40

Twelve different Tulane players scored a point in the Green Wave's 70-40 win over Houston Tuesday evening at Devlin Fieldhouse. Tulane was paced by Danielle Blagg, who scored a game-high 14 points, and a 10-point, 10-rebound, double-double performance by Adesuwa Ebomwonyi. 

Up 29-19, the Green Wave defense held the Cougars to one field goal in the last 5:26 of the first half, resulting in an 11-2 run and 40-21 lead at the break. Houston was led by Tyler Gilbert's seven points and a game-high tying 10 rebounds. Four of the junior’s boards came on the offensive end. Mariah Mitchell chipped in eight points, and Alecia Smith led the team in assists with four.
