Former Memphis Golf Player Marissa Steen Awarded LPGA Tour Card

Former University of Memphis women’s golfer Marissa Steen was one of 10 Symetra Tour players awarded her 2015 LPGA Tour Card in festivities in Daytona Beach, Florida on Sept. 21. In addition to earning her tour card, Steen was honored as the Symetra Tour Player of the Year after leading the tour money list in 2014.

Steen picked up three tournament victories and 10 top 10 finishes in 2014 to lead the tour with $75,348 in earnings. She was one of 10 Symetra Tour graduates recognized Sunday with the presentation of their Tour card. The Symetra tour graduates its top 10 players from each year’s money list to the LPGA tour.

Steen won her first professional tournament back in April at the Guardian Retirement Championship at Sara Bay and followed that win with a second victory in the Friends of Mission Charity Classic in May. Her third professional title came back in August and moved her from second to first on the Volvik Race for the Card money list. The three Symetra Tour wins qualified Steen to enter LPGA events already in 2014 while awaiting the Sunday ceremony to receive her tour card for the 2015 season.

At Memphis, Steen was a four-year letterwinner and was a 2012 first-team all-conference honoree. She was a tournament medalist six times in her Memphis career and was named the Conference USA women’s golf scholar-athlete of the year in her senior season. She set the school single season scoring record with a 73.97 stroke/round average in 2011 and was the 2011 C-USA individual runner-up. She graduated in May of 2012 with a degree in sports management and following graduation, began competing on the Symetra Tour, making nine cuts in 13 events. Last year was her second on the LPGA’s developmental tour, playing in 15 events and making 13 cuts, earning her $28,642.

Steen becomes the first University of Memphis graduate to get her LPGA tour card. She joins current LPGA tour member Meaghan Francella as tour members with Memphis credentials. Francella played two years at Memphis, earning Conference USA Freshman of the Year honors in 2001 after winning the conference championship.
