The American Today: Fernandez Gets 250th Career Win



UCF 61, SMU 57

UCF picked up its first win in program history at SMU on Sunday, defeating the Mustangs 61-57 at Moody Coliseum. Zykira Lewis and Aliyah Gregory notched double figures to lead the Knights. Lewis went a near-perfect 8-of-9 from the free throw line en route to 18 points while Gregory chipped in 10. Alicia Froling (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Destynee Hives-McCray (11 points, 11 rebounds) each recorded a double-double for SMU. Although the Knights struggled from the field, UCF was able to maintain its edge at the free throw line. UCF made 22-of-32 from the charity stripe compared to 14-of-18 by the Mustangs.

No. 2/2 UConn 96, Cincinnati 31

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored 12 of her 19 points in the first half and Breanna Stewart added 19 in No. 2/2 UConn's win at Cincinnati, 96-31, Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena. Mosqueda-Lewis moved into UConn's top-10 in career scoring during the win. She now has 1,874 points. Marley Hill had a team-high 10 points for the Bearcats while Ana Owens finished with a pair of 3-pointers, her fourth-straight game and 12th overall with multiple makes from beyond the arc.

RV/RV USF 64, NR/RV Tulane 45

USF head coach Jose Fernandez picked up his 250th career victory on Sunday with a 64-45 win over Tulane at the Sun Dome. Fernandez, in his 15th season with USF, is now 250-212 and swept the season series with the win over the Green Wave. Courtney Williams scored a game-high 24 points for the Bulls, her fifth straight game with at least 20, and posted her seventh double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. Leslie Vorpahl led the Green Wave with 12 points, with 10 of those points coming in the second half.
