No. 2/2 UConn 70, St. John's 54
Morgan Tuck led No. 2/2 UConn with 23 points and Breanna Stewart added 18 points and 11 rebounds in the Huskies' 70-54 win over RV/RV St. John's in ninth annual Maggie Dixon Classic Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. Moriah Jefferson finished with 16 points and six assists for UConn, who improved to 12-1 with the win.
UConn led by seven at the half before Tuck fueled a 13-2 run, scoring 11 straight points. Her 3-pointer made it 51-33 with 16:09 left. St. John's (12-2) could get no closer than 11 the rest of the way. Stewart scored her 1,500th career point in the win and became the third fastest player in school history to reach that mark.
Memphis 60, East Carolina 57 (OT)
It took an extra period, but Memphis (7-7, 1-2 American) picked up its first conference win of the season, 60-57, over visiting East Carolina (9-5, 0-3 American), Sunday afternoon at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The overtime win was the first overtime game of the season for the Tigers, who came back from 49-47 down with 0.1 on the clock to force overtime thanks to a pair of free-throws from junior forward Brianna Wright.
Wright, who entered the game a 41.4 percent shooter from the stripe, had hit a pair of free-throws in the first half, but was making her first attempts of the second period with the Tigers down 49-47. Memphis outscored ECU 11-8 in the extra frame for the win. Ariel Hearn finished with 26 points for Tigers while I'Tiana Taylor finished with a double-double (11 points, 15 rebounds) for the Pirates.
NR/RV USF 53, NR/RV Tulane 40
Alisia Jenkins posted her 10th double-double of the season (10 points, 14 rebounds) and Courtney Williams scored a game-high 14 points in NR/RV USF's 53-40 win at NR/RV Tulane Sunday evening at Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave shot a season low 24.6 percent (16-of-65) from the field in the loss, including a 2-for-21 day from 3-point range.
Despite the tough shooting night, Tulane’s defense held USF to its second lowest points total on the season, 19 points below their average. Four Green Wave players finished with seven rebounds or more: Tiffany Dale, Kolby Morgan, Adesuwa Ebomwonyi and Chinwe Duru. Morgan also added seven points on the offensive end.
