Temple outscored SMU 34-18 in the second half and rebounded from a tough shooting first period to take a 55-39 win over SMU Wednesday night at Moody Coliseum.
The Owls shot 25-percent (7-for-28) in the first half as the Mustangs led for the majority of the opening frame. SMU's five-point lead two minutes into the game was the largest lead of a first half that featured seven lead changes. The score was tied 21-21 at the break.
Temple opened the second half on an 11-4 run and took a 32-25 lead early in the frame. The Owls pushed their advantage to 12 points (49-37) with 4:57 remaining to pull away from the Mustangs.
Temple freshman Alliya Butts led all players with 17 points while classmate Tanaya Atkinson chipped in with 10. Alicia and Keely Froling each scored a team-high nine points for SMU, while Destynee Hives-McCray added eight points and six rebounds off the bench.
