UConn's Awuah, Temple's Gomez Sanchez Earn Offensive Player of the Week Honors



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s soccer honors for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 9.
 
Offensive Players of the Week
Kwame Awuah * Jr. * M * UConn
Awuah paced RV/18 UConn with two goals in the Huskies’ lone game of the week, a 5-0 win over Cincinnati, Saturday evening at Morrone Stadium. The win gave UConn sole possession of first place in the conference standings. The Huskies and the Bearcats entered Saturday’s game undefeated in American play.
 
Jorge Gomez Sanchez * Sr. * F * Temple
Gomez Sanchez scored two game-winning goals for Temple last week, helping the Owls go 2-0. He opened the week by scoring the game-winning tally in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Villanova. On Saturday, Gomez Sanchez scored the lone goal for the Owls in a 1-0 win at SMU. The win marked the first-ever victory for Temple over SMU.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Prosper Figbe * So. * B * USF
Figbe claimed his third Defensive Player of the Week honor after playing a crucial role in USF’s 2-0 win over Tulsa on Thursday. In addition to leading a backline that held the league’s top shooting team scoreless, Figbe assisted on both goals against the Hurricane.
 
Goalkeeper of the Week
Alex Cagle * R-Jr. * Temple
Cagle recorded two shutouts and two wins last week to push Temple to its seventh win of the season. He made 11 saves in the 2-0 week and posted his fourth consecutive shutout in the win over SMU. He is one shutout shy of matching the Owls’ all-time record for single-season consecutive shutouts.
 
Rookie of the Week
Burke Fahling * Fr. * F * Memphis
Fahling finished with three points last week and helped lead Memphis to their first conference win of the season with the 3-2 victory over UCF. Fahling scored the second goal of the match against the Knights, and opened the week with an assist in the 2-0 win over Lipscomb.
