American Athletic Conference Student-Athletes to Compete in 2016 NCAA T&F Regional Preliminaries

Preliminary Round Lists & Results

PROVIDENCE, R.l. - Select student-athletes from all of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field programs have qualified for the NCAA Championships preliminary competitions, as announced by the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Committee on May 19.

Eight schools from The American will compete at the east region preliminaries, held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. The UConn men's squad leads the way in the NCAA East, with 14 student-athletes competing in 13 individual events as well as the 4x400-meter relay. On the women's side, Cincinnati qualified a conference-leading 15 student-athletes for 14 individual events, and both the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays.

Houston, SMU and Tulsa will participate at the west region preliminaries, hosted by the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. The Cougars will be represented by 14 student-athletes in the men's preliminaries, in 17 individual events and both relays. The Houston men are the only American Athletic Conference team to qualify each of their 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams into the regional preliminaries. Houston's women's team will send seven athletes to compete in six individual events and each of the relays. The SMU women will have six athletes competing in the preliminaries, while three-time American Athletic Conference heptathlon champion Lucija Cvitanovic will advance directly to the NCAA Championships since combined events are not contested in the regional prelims.

The preliminaries will take course over three days, with first round and quarterfinal action of the track events and three attempts in first-round action for the field events. The top-12 qualifying athletes in each event from both regions will compete in the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held in Eugene, Ore., from June 8-11.

In four events, student-athletes from The American enter the regional preliminaries at No. 1 in their respective events.

In the east region, Avion Jones enters the men's high jump competition with the overall best mark in the nation, of 7-7/2.31 meters, which he set on May 14 at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The senior earned the Men’s Field Most Outstanding Performer honor at The American Championships in Orlando, Fla., after he shattered his own meet record of 7-0.50/2.15 meters to post the top mark in the NCAA this season, and become eligible for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials by surpassing the qualifying height of 7-5.75/2.28 meters.

USF's Matthew O'Neal enters men's triple jump at the NCAA East preliminaries with the region's best jump of 54-11.5/16.75 meters, which he set at on May 15 at The American Outdoor Championships. The senior's mark is also good for second overall in the NCAA this season.
Houston's LeShon Collins will enter the west region preliminaries as the top competitor in one individual event and one relay; the men's 200-meter dash and men's 4x100-meter relay. The senior crossed the finish line in the men's 200-meter dash in 20.43 at The American’s 2016 outdoor championships, to post the west region's top time. Also at the championships, Collins, Mario Burke, Jacarias Martin and Cameron Burrell ran the men's 4x100-meter relay in 38.95 to take the top spot in the NCAA West. Collins, the Men's Track Most Outstanding Performer at The American Outdoor Championships, also qualified for the men's 100-meter dash.
