Bearcats Hold on vs. SMU for Fourth-Straight Win

Cincinnati withstood a fourth-quarter comeback attempt by SMU, beating the Mustangs 67-65 on Tuesday evening to extend its winning streak to four-straight games. The win avenged an early-season loss to the Mustangs in Dallas and split the season series.

The Bearcats led by as many as 15 in the third quarter but were held without a field goal for the final three minutes and 56 seconds of the game to allow the Mustangs to get within a point at 66-65 off a 3-point shot from Devri Owens with five seconds left. Junior Shanice Johnson made a free-throw and SMU couldn’t connect on its half-court heave at the buzzer to preserve the win for the Bearcats.

Johnson paced the team with 17 points and 11 rebounds for her team-leading eighth double-double of the season. She added six steals, four assists and three blocks to round out her solid night against the Mustangs.

Junior Ana Owens  finished the game with nine points and is seven away from scoring 1,000 in her career. She will look to reach the milestone in the Bearcats’ next game vs. East Carolina on Saturday, Jan. 21.

SMU's McKenzie Adams led all scorers with a career-high 32 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter.
