PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The American Athletic Conference will crown champions in 40 events at the 2017 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Carl Lewis International Complex on the campus of the University of Houston.

The American Athletic Conference Championships will feature 11 women’s teams and eight men’s teams. Cincinnati, UConn, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, USF, Tulane and Tulsa will have both men’s and women’s teams competing while UCF, SMU, Temple only have women competing.

The American Digital Network will provide live and on-demand coverage of the 2017 Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning at Noon ET/11 a.m. CT on Friday, May 12.

Houston’s men’s team will be looking to win its second-straight Outdoor Track and Field title and third in four years and will look to do so on its home track. The Cougars also won this year’s Indoor Track and Field Championship with a record 174 team points.  Houston will look to do its damage on the track where the Cougars hold the top times in many events. Eli Hall is the leader in the conference in the 100m having run a 10.00 at the Penn Relays. Hall is also second in the conference in the 200m. Standout Amere Lattin is the conference leader in the 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles and fourth in the 200m. Houston has also posted the fastest time in both relays this season.

UConn and Tulsa, who finished second and third at this season’s indoor championship respectively, will look to knock off the Cougars and will look to do so in their own ways. Tulsa, four-time cross country champions have owned the distance races this year as a different member of the Golden Hurricane squad has the top time in the conference in the 1500m, 5000m and 10000m races. Tulsa also boasts the top-three times in the 10000m, top-two in the 1500m and three of the top four spots in the 5000m.

UConn’s Alvaro Chavez owns the second-best time in the conference in the 800m and Stephon Henry will be a contender in the hurdles events. The Huskies have also posted the four best marks in the triple jump of the season, led by Malik Snead who posted a 16.18m mark on April 15. UConn’s Cameron Thompson will look to keep the hammer throw title in Storrs. Thompson owns the best mark in the event this year with a distance of 60.67m.

One of the key athletes to watch will be Cincinnati’s Macklin Tudor. Tudor has been named Men’s Track Athlete of the Week the last five weeks of the season putting on a great year in both the discus and the shot put. Tudor’s mark of 63.54m at the Penn Relays qualified him for the USA Nationals and is the second best mark in the NCAA this season. Tudor will also battle with Houston’s Cameron Cornelius in the shot put as Cornelius currently leads Tudor by .03m in that event. Cincinnati’s Adrian Valles will be looking for his third-straight title in the pole vault and Alex Bloom will look to win the high jump and posted the best decathlon mark in The American this season.

Memphis will be looking to Jordan Wesner for success in the men’s high jump. Wesner owns the top clearance in the conference at 2.23m. On the track, Davon DeMoss holds the second fastest time in the 100m and is only one one-hundredth of a second behind the leaders in the 200m. Michael Criticos will be looking to win back-to-back javelin titles and Criticos has thrown the second best mark of the season (69.06m) only behind UConn’s Kevin Foster (72.09m).

Tulane has been led in the middle and long distances by Raymond Kibet and Emmanuel Rotich. Kibet has the top time in the conference in the 400m by over one-and-a-half seconds and Rotich is the conference leader in the 3000m steeplechase, second in the 5000m and third in the 1500m.

East Carolina’s Stefano Migliorati boasts the top time in the conference in the 800m at 1:48.68 and D’Ante Yarborough’s 14.21 is the second best time in the 110m hurdles.

USF’s David Bell and Joe Fogarasi will look to end Cincinnati’s reign in the pole vault. Bell is second and Fogarasi sits in third this season.
On the women’s side, Cincinnati will be looking to repeat as Outdoor champions but will have to deal with UCF, who beat the Bearcats by two points in the Indoor Championships in February.

Cincinnati’s strength will come in the field events, led by Annette Echikunwoke. Echikunwoke is the reigning NCAA Indoor weight throw champion and reigning American hammer throw champion, and is currently the leader in the conference in both the hammer throw (63.91m) and the shot put (16.79m). Loretta Blaut has posted the top conference mark in the high jump (1.82m) and Irati Mitxelena is third in the triple jump. Naomi Urbano has also posted the best score in the heptathlon (4,918) in the conference.

UCF, outside of Chelsea Gobourne who is second in the hammer throw this season, will look to the track for its points. After winning the event last year, Rosie Chamberlain is the leader in the conference in  the 800m this year. Anne-Marie Blaney has had a stellar season, leading The American in the 1500m (4:21.64), 5000m (15:43.61) and 10,000m (33:18.81). The Knights also own the top time in the conference in the 4x400m relay.

UConn, who has finished in the top-three the last three years, will look to continue that success with a well-balanced squad. Susan Areno has been strong in the middle distances, posting the second best time in the 800m and third fastest time in the 400m. Senior Emily Durgin, who won the 10000m in 2015, is second in both the 10000m and 5000m on the season and third in the 1500m. The Huskies have also seen success in the throwing events from freshman Divine Oladipo. Oladipo is tops in the conference in the discus and second in the hammer throw.

SMU owns the top times in both the 100m (Chelsea Francis, 11.42) and 200m (Latessa Johnson, 23.12). In the 100m East Carolina’s Courtney Weaver is only .02 seconds behind Francis and Houston’s Tori Williams is .05 seconds behind Johnson. Cera Chavez from Memphis is third in both of those events.

The 400m should be a tight race as Houston freshman Birexus Hawkins holds the top time of 54.07 in the conference but Bryana Robinson from Cincinnati is right on her heels with a 54.11.

Tulane should make “angry waves” in the hurdles, pole vault and javelin. Sophomore Jessica Duckett owns the top time in both the 100m hurldles (13.18) and 400m hurdles (59.06). The Green Wave own three of the top four marks in the pole vault this year with Alyssa Applebee at number one (4.27m), Mary Carson Pitts in second (4.17m) and Rebekah Markel in fourth (4.02m). Daliadiz Ortiz will be looking for her third-straight title in the javelin and has the second best time in the conference but will face a tough test from Ashley Pryke of Memphis who is first in the conference at 54.09m. Laruschka Joubert (Tulane) is third in the conference at 49.25m.

Houston looks to fare well in the jumps as Tonye’cia Burks is first in the long jump (6.41m) and triple jump (13.53m). Burks will take try to dethrone Chardae Greenlee of Memphis in the triple jump as Greenlee has won the last two titles and is second in the conference at 12.95m.

The 3000m steeplechase should be a good race as Houston’s Selena Sierra’s and SMU’s Shanoah Souza’s top times of the season are separated by just .4 seconds.
