Highlights
No. 23 UCF, No. 19 ECU, Houston, USF and Wichita State clinched weekend series, while UConn also took a win home on Saturday. The American went 8-3 against nonconference opponents, as its teams are set to close-out the weekend action on Sunday with seven games.
- Both UCF and ECU recorded Saturday sweeps with the Knights edging Siena twice and the Pirates defeating Charlotte in a doubleheader. UCF allowed just nine hits through 18 shutout innings, winning 1-0 and 2-0. The Knights have won 11 in a row.
Chris Holba and Tyler Smith each had quality starts, while Spencer Brickhouse, Seth Caddell and Jake Washer each hit home runs in ECU’s sweep against Charlotte. The Pirates belted a season-high 17 hits in Game 2 with six batters registering a multi-hit game. In Game 1, Holba picked up his fourth win of the season allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Smith earned the Game 2 win after throwing six scoreless frames where he gave up three hits, walked one and had three punch outs.
- Wichita State earned a series victory with a 5-1 win over UT Arlington in game two of the series. Jordan Boyer went 2-for-4 with a RBIs and a home run, while Gunnar Troutwine went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Starter Liam Eddy went seven innings and gave up one unearned run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
- Right-handed starter Peter Strzelecki struck out a career-high 12 batters through seven shutout innings to guide USF to a 6-0 win over Central Michigan to earn the series victory. This marked the Bulls’ second shutout of the year, as David Villar and Tyler Dietrich each knocked in two runs.
- Starter Aaron Fletcher improved to 3-0 on the year in his fourth start, tossing 6.0 innings without allowing an earned run on the way to a 5-2 rout over San Diego, giving the Cougars the weekend series win. Houston had a strong fourth inning, tacking on three runs. Designated hitter Rey Fuentes went 3-for-4, while shortstop Cooper Coldiron brought home two runs on a single up the middle in the fourth frame.
- After a tough loss on Friday night the UConn baseball team responded in the right way with a season-best 17-3 victory over The Citadel. The Huskies used a five-run surge in the second innings, followed by a seven-run spurt in the sixth innings to tally their 17 runs on 19 hits. Seven UConn players had multiple hits, led by outfielder Troy Stefanski who went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the sixth. Thid baseman Christian Fedko chipped in with two hits and three RBIs.
