Highlights
The American’s baseball teams enjoyed a powerful start to the weekend, going 5-3 with No. 19 UCF, No. 17 ECU, Houston and USF each earning shutout wins to highlight the Friday night action.
The Bulls’ pitching staff collected the second-most strikeouts in conference history with 22 and recorded their third no-hitter in program history on the way to blanking Army, 12-0. It marked the sixth-straight win for USF. Starter Shane McClanahan had a conference-best 15 strikeouts through six innings pitched before right-hander Carson Ragsdale tossed the final three frames, fanning seven batters.
The Knights earned their conference-leading sixth shutout of the season in a 10-0 win over Chicago State in the series opener. Starter Chris Williams tossed six shutout innings with five strikeouts. UCF strung together 11 hits with three players recording multiple base knocks.
Houston's Trey Cumbie struck out 10 en route to a complete game shutout, helping the Cougars to a 1-0 win against New Mexico. Cumbie is the first American Athletic Conference pitcher this year to pitch nine innings, as he scattered four hits. The All-America southpaw registered double-digit strikeouts for the third time this year, clinching his fifth-career complete game.
Starter Trey Benton and lefty Ryan Ross combined for 12 strikeouts and helped ECU to a 4-0 shutout of Maryland. Turner Brown and Bryant Packard drove in all four runs in their first games back to the Pirates lineup.
After falling to Wright State yesterday, Cincinnati got back into the win column on Friday, as it beat Toledo 5-4 in the opening game of the series. The Bearcats tacked on two runs in the eighth inning on the way to victory. The Rockets had bases loaded in three consecutive innings but the Bearcats pitching and defense was able to limit the damage in each frame to come out with the victory.
