The American’s baseball teams continued their strong midweek showing on Tuesday night, going 5-1 to start off the week. Over the past two weeks, the conference has gone 15-2 against nonconference foes. No. 20 UConn, Memphis, No. 20 USF, Tulane and No. 30 Wichita State each picked up a win.
UConn used a four-run fourth inning on the way to a 9-6 win at Holy Cross. The Huskies have won nine of their last 10 nonconference games and improve to 19-11 on the road this year. Outfielder Troy Stefanski went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Closer P.J. Poulin closed-out the ninth inning, fanning two Crusaders to collect his conference-leading 10th save of the year.
USF clinched its 10th series of the year with a 5-3 win over Bethune-Cookman. The Bulls used a pair of two-run spurts in the third and fifth innings and shutout the Wildcats through the final four frames. Shortstop Coco Montes and first baseman Duke Stunkel Jr. accounted for six of USF’s 10 hits.
Locked at 6-6 in the ninth inning, shortstop Alec Trela hit a grand slam, as reliever Hunter Smith retired the side to guide the Tigers an exciting 10-6 win. Trela ended the night with three hits (two for extra bases), five RBIs and two runs scored.
After shutting out Kansas 11-0 last week, Wichita State completed the season sweep of the Jayhawks with a 14-5 win in Lawrence. The Shocker’ used 17 hits to do their damage, surging in the sixth and eighth innings. Five Wichita State batters enjoyed a multi-hit game, as Travis outfielder Young went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a pair of doubles. Outfielder Luke Ritter had five RBIs, a home run and three hits.
Tulane a strong start, scoring seven runs through the first four frames to clinch an 8-2 win over Texas Southern. It marks third straight win in which Tulane has scored at least eight runs. The Green Wave is 4-1 in its past five nonconference games. Four arms our of Tulane’s pitching staff combined to keep Texas Southern scoreless through seven innings. Five different Green Wave batter had at least one RBI, led by designated hitter David Bedgood and second baseman Jonathon Artigues who each had two.
