Highlights
Three teams entered the weekend tied for the No. 1 spot in The American, as three teams remain at the top of the league’s standings after Sunday’s action. Cincinnati propelled itself up the standings after completing its first series sweep in two seasons to improve to 6-3 in league play for a .667 winning percentage alongside No. 11 ECU at 4-2. Houston edged USF to clinch its second conference series win to join the Bearcats and Pirates with a .667 winning percentage (6-3). UConn swept No. 22 UCF in a doubleheader, while No. 22 Wichita State defeated Tulane in a rubber game to clinch its weekend series.
- The Huskies used a three-run spurt in the opening inning of Sunday’s first doubleheader game, as the top of the order accounted for seven of their eight hits in the seven-inning match-up. P.J. Poulin earned his conference-leading ninth save of the season. Tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth, shortstop Anthony Prato crossed home plate on a wild pitch to give UConn the one-run Game 3 win to take the series.
- Cincinnati catapulted to the top of The American’s standings after completing a 3-0 weekend sweep over Memphis with an 8-7 win. The Bearcats survived a three-run rally in the top of the ninth to capture their first sweep in two years. Outfielder AJ Bumpass had two triples and two RBIs, while catcher Joey Thomas went 2-for-5 with four RBIs after hitting a three-run homer in the second inning. Memphis shortstop Alec Trela fueled the Tigers ninth inning spurt with a three-run home run, but the Bearcats held them off.
- The Shockers scored a run in all but three innings on the way to an 8-2 series finale win over Tulane. It marked the first American Athletic Conference series win for the program. Wichita State had three players record two hits, as starter Tommy Barhouse threw five innings and struck out six batters. Third baseman Alex Bohm hit his eighth home run of the season and went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Hits were tied at 10-10, as Tulane outfielders Grant Witherspoon and Tyler Heinrichs combined for six hits. The Shockers used three arms out of the bullpen to hold the Green Wave to two hits and one run through the final four innings.
- Game 3 consisted of five lead changes, as Houston tacked on the final three runs of the rubber match in the seventh inning to edge USF 9-8 and clinch the series. With the win, Houston improves to 6-3 and remains at the top of the league standings through three weeks of conference play. Third baseman Jared Triolo led the Cougars’ offense with three hits and two runs scored. The Bulls recorded 14 hits, as six USF batters had a multi-hit game.
